William R. Stubbs, 79, of Chesapeake City, MD, passed away peacefully May 1, 2014 at Abbey Manor Assisted Living, surrounded by his loving family.

A lifelong resident of Cecil County, Bill was born in Elkton on September 4, 1934, the son of the late Harry Van Dyke M Stubbs and Madeline Sykes Stubbs. Bill attended Salisbury University for 2 years before transferring to the University of Delaware where he received his B.S and then his M.A in American Studies. He also taught for 1 year in Germany after being in the Army and later became a member of the faculty of Elkton High School, teaching Social Studies/History until 1984. Upon leaving teaching, he never truly retired as he continued working at the family cottage industry businesses, Mux’n Room Dried Flowers and Sinking Springs Herb Farm where he also conducted historic tours of the property. During this time he also taught History at Cecil College.

Before becoming an active member of Grace Reformed Episcopal Church in Havre de Grace, Bill helped plant St. Peter’s Anglican Church in Chesapeake City and was attending Blue Bell Seminary School to become a Deacon. His legacy to his family is his Faith as God worked in him to help bring his family into God’s Kingdom.

Bill was an avid reader of history and has a library in his home where all of the books he has read over the years are kept. He also loved to write short stories and poetry as well as enjoyed researching and mapping the family tree.

Bill is survived by his beloved wife of 49 years, Ann Barr Graves Stubbs; a daughter, Katherine B. (Kate) Stubbs of Seattle, WA and a son Claiborne L. (Clay) Stubbs of Chesapeake City, and a brother. He was preceded in death by a brother, as well.

A service celebrating Bill’s life will be held at Sinking Springs, 843 Elk Forest Road, Elkton, MD 21921 on Tuesday May 6, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. with a reception to follow. Burial will be private and he will be interred on the farm. Memorial contributions may be made payable to Grace Reformed Episcopal Church or the Alzheimer’s Association and mailed to R.T. Foard Funeral Home, 318 George St., Chesapeake City, MD 21915.
