William Everett Smith, age 84 passed on July 2, 2026. Bill was born in Chestertown, Maryland on April 9, 1942 to the late Daniel Bennett Smith, Sr. and Sara Johnson Smith.

His earliest years were spent in Galena and Cecilton Maryland.  In 1947 his family relocated to Aberdeen, Maryland where he graduated from Aberdeen High School in 1960.  On April 14, 1958, Bill was voted into the Aberdeen Fire Department where he began a distinguished career as a firefighter and paramedic.  He proudly earned his 50-year service pin with the department in 2008, and remained a dedicated member for a total of 68 years. Ultimately, he achieved the rank of Assistant Chief and was a member of the Board of Directors of the Aberdeen Fire Department.  Most notably he was recognized for saving three lives.

Bill’s career began with American Cyanamid and E.I. duPont De Nemours, moving on in 1967 to the Edgewood Arsenal as a Chemical Engineering Technician.  Hard work and determination resulted in his earning an Associate of Arts in Engineering from Harford Community College in 1973. During his thirty-three-year Civil Service career, Bill progressed from the position of Packaging Specialist to the position of Specifications/Standards & Packaging Team Leader of the Edgewood Chemical and Biological Center.  As a subject matter expert, he led design, fabrication, testing, contract oversight and documentation efforts to meet operational requirements for Chemical and Biological Defense items in support of the Department of Defense.

Bill was an exceptional athlete and took great pride in being a very low handicap golfer.  He played in softball and basketball leagues out on the proving ground.  He was an exceptional skier, having traveled to as many ski resorts as he could throughout the country.

Bill also enjoyed playing racket-ball, going white water rafting and fishing.  Bill was still fishing as late as last summer, and took real pleasure hanging out at the Conowingo Dam to watch the Bald Eagles.

Bill relished his annual trips to Fair Hill Races and had a knack for picking the winning ponies.  He was also never one to turn down a poker game. Bill was an avid Orioles fan and made sure he caught all the games.  He enjoyed collecting, and accumulated an extensive baseball card and beer stein collection.   Bill savored eating, whether home cooking or fine dining.  Some of his favorites were the Legendary Oysters Rockefeller at the Wellwood Club in Charlestown, Meatball Subs from Bainbridge Market in Perryville and the World-Famous Crab Cakes from the Box Hill Pizzeria in Abingdon.  Up until a month ago Bill was still driving all the back roads through Harford and Cecil County, always checking out new construction.

A Celebration of Bill’s Life will be held on Tuesday, August 25, 2026 at 11:00 AM at the R. T. Foard Funeral Home – 318 George Street, Chesapeake City, MD. The family will begin receiving friends at 10:00 AM. Inurnment will follow at Cecilton Methodist Cemetery.
