William E. Bland, 72, of Bear, DE, passed away January 4, 2015 at Christiana Hospital with his loving wife by his side, following a courageous battle with several illnesses.

Born in Newark, DE on November 20, 1942, Bill was the son of the late Ernest and Thelma Morrison Bland. He graduated from Newark High School, and devoted his life to serving the public in the Air National Guard and for the State of Delaware, working in financial management at the Delaware Hospital for the Chronically Ill, as a life member of Aetna Hose Hook and Ladder and served on the Brookside Police Department. Bill enjoyed hunting and fishing and especially enjoyed his time at his family vacation homes at the beach and in the mountains.

He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Marilyn Bland of Bear and his brother Ronald Cheadle and numerous nieces and nephews.

Services honoring his life will be held at 11:30 am on Wednesday January 14, 2015 at R.T. Foard & Jones Funeral Home, 122 West Main St., Newark, DE 19711 with a visitation beginning at 10:30 am. Burial will be in Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project and mailed to the funeral home.

You have our deepest sympathy for your loss. Over 46 years ago Bill was an usher in our wedding. We went out to dinner several times and to the dances at the firehouse many years ago. Several years ago Bill drove by with one of his hunting buddies (who was a neighbor) and stopped by for a chat. It was great to see him again.

Uncle Bill never took himself too seriously, and didn't let others around him take themselves too seriously either, but he lived a seriously good life. I believe he's better now than he has ever been, but we are the worse off that he's not still with us, cracking jokes and encouraging us to dream big dreams.

I would like to say how sorry I was to hear about Bill's passing. We went through orientation at DHCI at the same time and in turn he was the boss of my department until his retirement. I have quite a few memories of Bill as I know you must have millions. My name by the way is Tammy Thompson. Please take care of yourself.
