William “Bill” Munch, Jr., age 88, of Newark, DE passed away Friday, September 23, 2016 at Somerford House in Newark, DE. He was born October 28, 1927 in Philadelphia, PA, to the late William, Sr., and Virginia (Bach) Munch.
Bill graduated from the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point, NY. After graduation, Bill served as a deck officer on tankers and later sold marine equipment, ultimately retiring from Schat Harding. Moving to this area in 1968, Bill was longtime resident of Country Club Drive in Fairfield for 44 years. He was a faithful member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church of Newark, DE. He belonged to the Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers and would lend his knowledge and experience to the University Of Delaware College Of Marine Studies in Lewes, DE. Having a great love for the sea, he started sailing as a member of the Greater Wildwood Yacht Club in Wildwood, NJ. He continued to enjoy sailing, and model railroading the rest of his life. Bill also enjoyed gatherings and tipping a few martinis with his family and friends, who will miss him dearly.
Bill is survived by his sons, William D.”Bill” Munch and his wife, Jo, of St. Augustine, FL and Steven A. Munch and his wife, Toni, of Wilmington, DE; daughter, Jackie Plystak and her husband, Tom, of Lincoln University, PA; grandchildren, Kristin Eick, Kelli Munch, Chris and Jon Plystak; and great grandchildren, Evan and Ally Eick.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his loving wife, Jacqueline (Weckman) Munch and brother, Robert Munch.
A Celebration of Bill’s Life will be held at 11AM on Wednesday, September 28, 2016 at R.T. Foard Funeral Home, Inc., 122 West Main Street, Newark, DE 19711.
