William A. Thomson aged 93 died on November 5 of 2021 suddenly at home. He was born in western New York State in March of 1928, and is survived by his much beloved wife Anne of 70 years, his sister Janet Plumpton of Carlisle, PA; a son John of Ft. Bragg, CA: daughter Carol Slowik of Santa Rosa Beach, FL; son Billy of Murrells Inlet, SC; son Gordon of Newark, DE and son Richard of Salt Lake City, UT. He is also survived by 11 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
Bill was a salesman of scientific and analytical instruments and founded Thomson Instrument Company which continues today in Virginia and California. His greatest accomplishments however came from his life-long love of track and field and he enjoyed an illustrious career as a competitor, coach and official for more than fifty years at some of the highest levels of the sport. He was a charter inductee in the Delaware Track and Field Hall of Fame in 1994, and also was inducted into the Delaware Sports Hall of Fame in 1997 (see those respective websites for his biographies).
Bill served as a radioman in the U.S. Navy at the end of the WWII and as an artillery officer in the U.S. Army during the Korean conflict, and he continued in the Delaware Army National Guard for several years.
Funeral services will be held at the First Presbyterian Church, 292 W. Main Street, Newark, DE on Saturday, December 4, 2021 at 11:00 a.m. where family and friends may start visiting at 10:00 a.m. Inurnment will be held on Monday, December 6, 2021 at 1:00 p.m. at Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Bear, DE. He had a good life filled with achievement, good friends and family.
