William “Bill” Gunter passed away peacefully on January 28, 2026. Born in Hartley, Delaware on December 17, 1941, he was the son of the late William Sunday Gunter and Mildred Bessie (née Todd) Gunter. Bill was the devoted and loving husband of 61 years to Shirley Jean (née Cerato) Gunter, with whom he built a life rooted in faith, family, and hard work.
Bill served his country in the United States Army as a Military Police officer during the Vietnam Era. His sense of duty and discipline carried into every aspect of his life. Known for his strong work ethic and tireless determination, Bill began his career as a heavy equipment operator and went on to build a successful construction company from the ground up—an accomplishment that reflected both his grit and intelligence.
Though he carried a gruff, old-school exterior, Bill was genuinely friendly and could strike up a conversation with just about anyone. Beneath that rugged demeanor was a sharp mind and a deeply faithful heart. He earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Theology from Eastern Christian College and later became an ordained minister in the Church of Christ, serving others through his faith and convictions.
Bill had a well-known sweet tooth and never passed up ice cream or candy, a small joy that brought a smile to those who knew him best. He believed in doing things the right way, valued honesty and responsibility, and lived by principles that reflected his “old-school mentality.” Above all, he was a man who loved his family fiercely and lived a life of purpose and dedication.
He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
Bill is survived by his beloved wife, Shirley Gunter; his children, William Gunter II, and Bob Gunter and his wife Stefanie; grandchildren, Dylan McCracken and Mackenzie McCracken; great-grandchildren, Nadia Webster and Gunner McCracken; his sister, Faye Conrad; and many extended family members and friends.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Tuesday, February 3, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at R. T. Foard Funeral Home, 111 South Queen Street, Rising Sun, Maryland. Family and friends may gather beginning at 10:00 a.m.
