Walter John Campbell Mackay, age 88, of Elkton, MD, passed away on Monday, January 29, 2018 at Christiana Hospital in Newark, DE, surrounded by his loving family. He was born on March 19, 1929 in Thurso, Caithness Parish, Scotland, to the late Alexander John and Bertha Campbell Mackay.
After serving in the military in his native Scotland, Walter came to his adopted home of the United States and served in the Army for 28 years, including two tours in Vietnam. He retired and continued to work in the commissary at the Aberdeen Proving Grounds. He enjoyed reading, doing crossword puzzles and watching boxing matches. Walter’s greatest joy was being the loving husband and father to his late wife and family, who will miss him dearly.
He is survived by his step-children whom he loved as his own; Fred Elmer Holland, and his wife, Linda, of Bloomfield Hills; MI, Sue Ann Yurcovic, and her husband, Don, of Keystone Heights, FL; Glenna H. Ramey, and her husband, Pete, of Elkton, MD; and Glenwood P. Holland, and his wife, Sue, of Bear, DE; twelve grandchildren, numerous great grandchildren, great great grandchildren, and nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he is predeceased by his wife of 48 years, Janice J. Mackay, his sisters, Betty and Ann, and a granddaughter, Christina O’Farrell.
A Celebration of Walter’s Life will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, February 3, 2018 at R.T. Foard Funeral Home, P.A., 259 east Main Street, Elkton, MD 21921. Friends and family may visit one-hour prior beginning at 10:00AM. Burial with military honors will follow with a graveside service at Elkton Cemetery.
