Virginia died peacefully July 29, 2012, exactly 7 months after losing her husband of 64 years, Gene. She missed her 91st birthday by 9 days. She is survived by her two brothers, W.T, and Terry Dawson and daughter Vicki Krohn, son Gregory Lee Sproul, grandson Mathew Krohn, granddaughter Kelley Heuisler, and great- grandchildren, Nathaniel and Gideon Krohn, and Adelaide Heuisler.
Born in Alicia, Arkansas, Virginia came to California with her parents and seven younger brothers in the 30’s as part of the great migration generated by the dust bowl and the Depression. She picked cotton and grapes to help the family survive their first months in the Golden State.
She joined the Navy during WWII and served at the Naval Air Station Patuxent River in Maryland.
Utilizing the GI Bill, Virginia attended college at Pepperdine University. She graduated with a BA in Psychology and become an elementary school teacher. Her first teaching job was in a school bus with 50 children. She ended her teaching career in Downey California at Gallatin School where she taught for 35 years. She was teacher of the year in 1976 for the Downey Unified School District. She was passionate about teaching children to read and opening up the world of learning.
An avid gardener, Virginia was known as the flower lady of Orangevale growing over 3000 gladiolas on her property on Cherry Ave. She was happiest when her fingers were in the dirt and she was making something beautiful grow.
She will be missed.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 11, 2012 at the Price Funeral Home, 6335 Sunrise Blvd., Citrus Heights, CA 95610 where friends may call at one hour prior.
