Virginia Hazel VanDyke, age 93, of Rising Sun, MD, passed away peacefully on Monday, January 12, 2015 surrounded by her loving family. She was born April 23, 1921 in Ramsey Ridge, VA to the late Thomas and Sylvia (Deel) Newberry.
Family oriented, taking care of children and grandchildren, she was a beloved wife mother and grandmother. She was a no nonsense woman giving advice, wanted or not, because she cared and loved her family immensely. She would often say “Life is not fair, but God is good.” Hazel always had a bountiful vegetable garden, and was known for cooking Southern Virginian delicacies such as “squirrel gravy” and “butterscotch pie” to name a few. She would watch the game shows “Wheel of Fortune”, “Jeopardy”, and “Family Feud”, and would challenge the younger family members for answers and beat them. Hazel especially loved the Baltimore Orioles and would watch or attend the games.
She is survived by her sons, Clyde S. VanDyke and his wife Norma Jean of Elkton, MD, Bill VanDyke and his wife Freda of Rising Sun, MD, and Dan VanDyke of Port Deposit, MD; sisters Opal Williams of Lynchburg, VA and Edra Owens of Haysi, VA; 8 grandchildren, and 16 great grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, she is predeceased by her husband Clyde VanDyke in 1973, two brothers and three sisters.
