Tom MacAulay of Newark, Delaware passed away on December 17, 2011 – two days before his 90th birthday. Son of Harriet Rice MacAulay and Stuart MacAulay, he was born December 19, 1921 in Paisley, Scotland. He grew up in the Philadelphia area and graduated from Frankford High School class of 1940. Tom proudly served his country in the US Coast Guard on a US Navy Ship from 1942-1946. He went on to attend Grove City College, Grove City, PA and received a degree in Mechanical Engineering. There he met his future wife, Phyllis Cordingley also a graduate of Grove City College.
Married in 1949, Tom and Phyllis began their life journey together.
They began building their family in Grove City and then in 1958 moved to Delaware when Tom joined the DuPont Company. Tom and Phyllis were members of Asbury Methodist Church in New Castle and later the Evangelical Presbyterian Church in Newark, Delaware.
Tom was an active member of the Trap & Skeet Club at DuPont. He had a real love of the outdoors and shared this with his family through annual camping trips around the United States.
Tom retired in 1986 after 29 years of service with the DuPont Company.
He is preceded in death by his wife of 60 years and his great grandson Bowen Thomas Gillis.
He is survived by his sister, Jean Clymer of Reston, Virginia; daughter Sandra Melvin of Wilmington, DE; daughter, Debra Nock of Mechanicsburg, PA; daughter and son-in-law, Marcie and Steve Lee of Landenberg, PA; son and daughter-in-law Tom and Sue MacAulay of Landenberg, PA;
Grandchildren – Tammie & Jon Hodgson, Heather & John (Mac) Gillis, Arizona; Michelle Melvin, Delaware; Scott MacAulay, Florida; Alexandra Lee and Jessica Lee , Pennsylvania; Great grandchildren – Ethan & Luke Hodgson and Brooklyn & Blake Gillis, Arizona.
Tom was known by many for his never ending support and dedication to his family.
Following retirement, he and Phyllis frequently travelled around the world.
With his passion of physical fitness, he could often be found walking at the park, working out or ‘socializing’ at the fitness center, enjoying the Ski Slopes with his friends, or out in Montana at the McGinnis Ranch enjoying riding horses.
In 2009 he moved to Ware Presbyterian Village, Oxford, PA, where he has been surrounded by an incredible group of loving care givers who shared that they always enjoyed his jokes; his consistent grateful and kind style; and his wonderful singing voice (developed through years of singing in the Church choir).
We will celebrate his life at Evangelical Presbyterian Church, 308 Possum Park Road, Newark, DE 19711 on Saturday January 14, 2012 at 11:00 am.
The family will receive guests beginning at 10:00 am. Burial will be private at the Delaware Veterans Cemetery on a later date.
