Susan Powell Orndorf (79) of North East, Maryland, passed away peacefully on June 24, 2026, surrounded by her loving family.
Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Susan was the cherished daughter of the late John Wilson Powell, Jr. and Margaret Susan Powell (née Hamilton). She was the devoted wife of 61 years to Robert Carson Orndorf.
Sue graduated from Marple Newtown High School, Class of 1964. She earned B.S. in Nursing and a B.A. in Behavioral Science from Widener University in 1977. She enjoyed a long and distinguished nursing career, first at Paoli Memorial Hospital in Paoli, Pennsylvania, and later at Harford Memorial Hospital in Havre de Grace, Maryland.
A highly respected nurse, Susan was known for her clinical excellence, calm professionalism, and genuine care. Known for her unwavering dedication, she consistently went above and beyond to care for her patients. Her commitment to nursing extended far beyond her duties — it was a true calling that defined much of her life.
A lifelong caregiver at heart, Susan was also deeply involved in her community. She served as a volunteer paramedic with the Newtown Square Volunteer Fire Department and its Auxiliary. She was a longtime Girl Scout leader whose daughter followed in her footsteps, and she remained an active, faithful member of West Nottingham Presbyterian Church, generously giving her time and talents wherever needed.
In her personal time, Sue loved music, gardening, and found joy in quilting, creating beautiful family heirlooms that will be treasured for generations. She also had a deep love for horses and cherished every opportunity to ride.
Susan approached every role — nurse, mother, wife, volunteer, and friend — with the same single-minded dedication and heartfelt care. Family was very important to Susan, and she was always ready to help or support in any way, big or small, that she could. She will be deeply missed by all whose lives she touched.
She is survived by her loving husband, Robert Carson Orndorf; her daughter, Lin Orndorf, and her wife, Porscha; her brother, Jack Powell; her brother-in-law, Steve Orndorf, and sister-in-law, Lynn Orndorf; her nieces, Becky and Rachel Powell, Cindy Adams (née Orndorf), Karen Wallace (née Orndorf), six great nephews, one great niece, and many extended family members. Susan was preceded in death by her great niece, Mikayla Philpot.
A Celebration of Life will be held at West Nottingham Presbyterian Church in Colora, Maryland on Tuesday, June 30, 2026, at 11am. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the West Nottingham Presbyterian Church Mission Fund in Susan’s memory.
