Stewart Wesley Gahagan, Sr., 81, of Elkton, MD, passed away October 13, 2012 at Union Hospital following a brief illness.

Born in Conowingo, MD on April 19, 1931, Stew was the son of the late Cloy and Pauline Gahagan. He graduated from Johns Hopkins University with a BE in Chemical Engineering. After working for Johns Hopkins University from 1953-55, he joined Mobay Chemical Co. (Monsanto & Bayer). From 1956-1972, he worked at a number of positions at Mobay, finally as marketing manager and in 1972, he accepted a position as Director of Marketing for McNeil Corp. In 1979, he moved back to MD and started a small machinery business and continued working until 2001. He and his wife, Nancy, sailed on the Chesapeake Bay for 20 years and travelled extensively during their retirement years. He was kept busy as well with his grandchildren and their various activities. A week ago, family and friends gathered and celebrated Stew and Nancy’s 60th wedding anniversary.

Stew is survived by his wife, Nancy Y. Gahagan; two daughters, Katharine Smith (Ray) of Cincinnati, OH, and Suzanne Mace (Jon) of Aptos, CA; a son Stewart Wesley Gahagan, Jr. (Sharon) of Elk Neck; 10 grandchildren; 3 great grandchildren; and his sister Joyce Crothers of Perryman.

According to his wishes, services will be private. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society c/o R.T. Foard Funeral Home, P.A., 259 East Main St., Elkton, MD 21911.

We will miss our many "happy hours" with Stew (seated in his favorite chair near the fireplace) and Nancy where we solved just about all the problems of the world and had many laughs while doing so. Our sincere condolences to the entire family.

I come from a small family so I didn't know what to expect the first time I met Grandpa Bud, Nanny, all Sue's cousins and the rest of the family. It was the summer of 1981 and I had just graduated from college. When I pulled up in front of Grandpa Bud and Nanny's home on the Elk River and was told by Grandpa Bud not to worry and leave my keys in the car (unlocked?), I knew I was somewhere special. Treated like a family member before I became one, it was pretty easy for me to see where Sue got her smarts and her charm. When Stewart and Nancy took me sailing for the first time and there was no wind and no sailing to be had, Stewart and Nancy just talked with me for hours. Quite an interesting pair I thought and my feelings didn't change in 30+ years. Thanks for teaching me me to eat crabs the right way and thanks for teaching my kids to fish. Thanks for sharing the recent anniversary pictures. There are so many fond and funny memories of our childhood. Uncle Bud was a kind soul, like his mother Pauline. Love and prayers to my cousins and Aunt Nancy. Brad (and Penny).
