On Tuesday, Feb 17, 2015 Stewart Leighton Nengel, age 94, of Millsboro, DE, passed away. He was born April 1, 1920 in Baltimore, MD, to Francis and Ruth (McCarter) Nengel.
Stewart proudly served his country during WWII and was involved in a plane crash in California early in his enlistment. Having been one of only two survivors he sustained critical injuries and spent several months in the hospital. Upon his release he went on to serve three more years after which time he received an honorable discharge. He then went to work for DP&L and retired in 1981 after 35 years. Family was always his priority and he cherished the time he spent with them especially during his retirement years. An avid golfer, he was a member of Sussex Pines Country Club for over 40 years. Always a gentleman, Stewart was known for his kind manner and quick wit. He will be greatly missed and those who knew him will forever cherish the footprints that Stewart left on their hearts.
He is survived by his wife of 72 years, Aline Fletcher Nengel; his daughters, Ann Robinson and husband, Donny, of Newark, DE, and Charlene Havens and husband, Don, of Gig Harbor, WA; brother, Milton Nengel of Hialeah, FL; three grandchildren, eight great grandchildren, and two great great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank the staff of Union Hospital for the loving and devoted care that they gave to Stewart.
A memorial service will be held at 12:30 pm on Friday, March 20 at R.T. Foard Funeral Home, PA, 259 East Main St., Elkton, MD 21921. Family and friends may visit one hour prior beginning at 1130AM. Military Honors and Burial will follow at Delaware Veteran’s Cemetery in Bear, DE. In lieu of flowers, memorial contribution can be made to “Wounded Warriors Project” and sent c/o the funeral home.
