Steve was among the last group of young men to be drafted into the U.S. Army during the Vietnam era, and upon his discharge entered the Maryland State Police Academy. He enjoyed a long and distinguished career with the Maryland State Police in which he served as a road Trooper, a K-9 handler, and a truck enforcement officer in Cecil County. During his career he was awarded a Governor’s Citation of Outstanding Merit and named Cecil County’s Policeman of the Year for rescuing an ice fisherman who had fell through the ice at Funk’s pond above the Conowingo dam.
Upon retirement from MSP, he worked for the Rising Sun Police Department, where he started a youth program which the Mayor called “Steve’s Kids”. He was awarded State of Maryland Police Officer of the Year for the program.
He continued serving on numerous local boards and commissions, including as Chairman of the Board of License Commissioners. He was also a devoted supporter of many community organizations, especially the Boys & Girls Club. He was a member of Rising Sun American Legion Post #194, Maryland Troopers Association Lodge #15. In his free time, Steve was an avid bass fisherman and enjoyed spending time on his boat with friends.
