Shyuan Hsia (age 83), of Newark, DE, passed away on August 8, 2024. Born on December 7, 1940, in Szechuan, China, she was the beloved daughter of the late Te-I Hsia and Hsu Hsia (née Sun).
In 1961, Shyuan embarked on a courageous journey, immigrating to the United States to pursue her education. She earned a Ph.D. in Microbiology from the University of Washington, marking the beginning of a distinguished career in teaching and research. Shyuan’s expertise and passion for science led her to hold numerous academic and research positions at institutions across the country, where she inspired countless students and colleagues.
Beyond her professional achievements, Shyuan was a woman of many talents and interests. She found joy in cultivating her garden, where she nurtured a variety of flowers, bringing beauty to her surroundings. Her love for nature also led her to volunteer at Longwood Gardens, where she shared her horticultural knowledge and enthusiasm with others.
Shyuan was deeply committed to her community, particularly in fostering cultural heritage. She volunteered at the Chinese American Community Center in Hockessin, DE, where she delighted in teaching arts and crafts to children, helping them to explore and celebrate their creativity.
Shyuan’s warmth, kindness, and generosity of spirit touched the lives of all who knew her. She will be profoundly missed by her family, friends, and all those whose lives she enriched.
Shyuan is survived by her cherished sisters, Chi Chao and her husband Tze, and Jeou Kwan and her husband C.M.; her loving nieces, Lynn Chao, Faye Chao, and Mildred Kwan; and her adored great-nieces, Elyse and Claire Meder.
A celebration of Shyuan’s life will be held on Saturday, August 17, 2024, at 12:00 PM at R.T. Foard & Jones Funeral Home, 122 W Main Street, Newark, DE. The family will receive friends beginning at 11:00 AM.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Shyuan’s memory to the Chinese American Community Center.
