Shirley Forman Anderson, age 86, of Newark, Delaware passed away on April 7, 2018. Born in Champaign/Urbana Illinois, on Oct. 6, 1931, she was the daughter of the late Don Brent and Eleanor Doud Forman. After graduating from P.S. Dupont High School in 1949, she entered the University of Delaware (Class of 1953). She then attended Goldey Beacom College on their work study program.
For most of her working life, she was employed at the University of Delaware and retired in 1996 from the American Philosophical Association. She was a past member of the Newark Soroptimist Club, the Newark Lions Club, and the Newark Historical Society. She also served two terms as a commissioner with the Newark Housing Authority.
Shirley enjoyed her time spent at the Newark Senior Center as a board member, an avid bridge and pinochle player, and volunteered whenever needed. She organized Christmas Day dinners for many years and in 2003, was honored as a recipient of the Jefferson Award for Volunteerism.
In July 2007, she accomplished her goal of having been in every state when she traveled to South and North Dakota. In addition to that accomplishment, she spent at least one night in all states but the Dakotas.
Shirley is survived by her husband of 31 years, Harold Hambleton, two daughters, Linda (Bob) Wheeler of Saint Ignatius, Montana and Anne (Steve) Bleyl of Woodbury, Minnesota and one son, Michael (Mary) Thompson of Newark. Shirley is also survived by nine grandchildren, 5 1/3 great- grandchildren, her sister, Marcia Booth of Newark, two stepdaughters, Elaine (Dan) Roop of Newark, Judy (Charles) Ives of Smyrna, one stepson, John (Kim) Hambleton of Smyrna, three step-grandchildren and 7 step great-grandchildren.
Shirley was a beloved mom, wife, Grammie, G.G., friend, sister, daughter, aunt, step-mom, step-grammie, mother-in-law, and an all-around ‘nice person.’ Known for her sense of humor, we are certain she will continue to make people laugh in heaven as well.
A memorial service will be held at R.T. Foard & Jones, Inc., 122 West Main Street, Newark, DE 19711 on April 11, 2018 at 11:00 AM. A visitation will be held one hour prior beginning at 10:00 AM.
