I had the opportunity to work with Sam in the racing office during the 2010 summer meet at Monmouth Park. He taught me so much more than I ever knew about the industry previously in those few short months, and always had me laughing and smiling with his jokes and jolly personality. Sam was such a great guy to work for, and I am so glad I got to know him, and wish I had gotten to spend more time with him. RIP buddy.

I met Sam during the 2013 season at Hialeah when he hired me to be the track veterinarian. It turned out that his sister and her husband had been professors of mine in vet school....small world....I am deeply saddened by your loss but thankful for the opportunity to have met and worked with Sam....my sincerest condolences...

there is not a day that goes by that I don't think about sam. some with a smile, others with tears. I know he would much prefer the smiles than the tears but sometimes I just can't help it. sitting here in florida I feel that i'm just waiting for November to come around and he'll be back. I miss him so much.
Peace of mind is a call away. We’re here when you need us most.

I just met Sam Abby in December looking for a stall for my lead pony. I usually go to Gulfstream, but with Calder charging for stalls, Gulfstream was full. Sam was such a help to me-giving me a stall for my lead pony so i could work at Hialeah for the winter. I am so happy that I got to thank him before he passed away. I just wanted everyone to know that Sam helped me when no one else would. Thank You

I am sickened by this tragedy - Sambo was such a wonderful man, kind and larger than life. I always wished that I could have spent more time with him at the track, learning the ins and outs. I was lucky enough the last two years to visit him at Hialeah while in Florida for horseshows in Wellington. The horse blood runs deep in the Abbey family - the last visit I had with him was in January 2013 when I invited myself and a friend to to stay with him at the last minute. We went to La Tub for dinner and then he and I sat up until the wee hours of the morning with him sharing stories of his life. I am so grateful for that time with him. Cheryl, I was so looking forward to the next chapter in your lives - hopefully being able to visit more, and really catch up at the Abbey family reunion this Summer. Each time I think of him I can hear his voice, gravelly and usually including a choice word or two, with a smile in his eye and kindness in his heart.

We will miss you, Sam. Thank you for your friendship and ability to make me laugh when times are tough - because of that, you've given me a thicker skin to weather this industry. Although many have not had the chance to see, you had a very big heart which I admired most. Rest in peace, my friend.
