Ruth Zalman Osborne, age 83, of Newark, Del., passed away suddenly on Thursday, July 23, 2015. She was recently preceded in death by her husband, Frank J. Osborne, Jr.
Ruth was born in Emporia, Va., the daughter of Emil Zalman and Mary Bodish Zalman. She spent her early years on the family farm. Her experiences there instilled values that would guide her throughout her life. She graduated from Greensville County High School and went on to receive her R.N. degree from Stuart Circle Hospital School of Nursing in Richmond, Va.
While working as a Veterans’ Administration nurse in Boydton, Va., Ruth rented a room from her future husband’s parents and met Frank Osborne when he returned from his service in Korea. Ruth also joined the military and rose to the rank of Lieutenant JG in the Navy Nurse Corps. She requested a discharge to marry Frank in 1957.
Ruth and Frank moved to Delaware, eventually settling in Newark. Ruth worked as a nurse at Dover AFB Hospital, the VA Hospital (Wilmington), the Medical Center of Delaware and eventually Christiana Care, retiring in 1993. She especially loved working with mothers and babies.
Ruth was a longtime member of Newark United Methodist Church where she was active with the Women’s Circle and volunteered at Hope Dining Room. She will be remembered as an accomplished seamstress, pie baker, avid gardener and helpful neighbor.
Ruth is survived by her daughter, Mary Torbey and her husband, Edmond Torbey, of Newark, Del. and her daughters, Ann Osborne of Newark, Del. and Frances Osborne of Glen Allen, Va.
Visitation will be on Thursday, July 30, from 3:00-5:00 PM in the Memorial Lounge of Newark United Methodist Church, 69 East Main Street, Newark, DE 19711. Funeral services will follow at 5:00 PM. Burial will be on Friday, July 31, at 11:00 AM at Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the Newark United Methodist Church “Renewing Our Foundation” fund at the above address.
