Ruth Elizabeth Kester, a cherished member of the Rising Sun, MD community, passed away peacefully on Sunday, March 24, 2024, at the age of 94. Born on June 17, 1929, in Colora, MD, she was the beloved daughter of the late Amos and Mary Nesbitt. Ruth shared 53 wonderful years of marriage with her late husband, Arno Kester, until his passing in 2004.
Ruth’s warm demeanor and familiar face brightened the halls of the First National Bank in Rising Sun, where she forged countless friendships. An unwavering Baltimore Orioles enthusiast, she rarely missed a game, and her passion for word search puzzles and evenings spent watching Family Feud and Wheel of Fortune brought her immense joy.
As a dedicated member of the West Nottingham Church, Ruth found fulfillment in volunteering and lending her voice to the choir. Throughout her life, she remained deeply involved in her community, contributing her time and energy to organizations such as the Cecil County Farm Museum, Fulton Grange, Harmony Lodge, International Order of Job’s Daughters, RSHS Alumni Association and Eastern Star, leaving an indelible mark of service and compassion.
Ruth’s legacy of selflessness and care for others will forever be treasured by those who knew her. She is survived by her loving daughter, Patti Jo Cook and her husband, Robert, and leaves behind a legacy of six grandchildren: Joshua Rebman and his wife, Jamie, Jeremy Rebman Sr. and his wife, Terri, Amanda Hovis and her husband, Chris, Sara Cook, Cecil Vicars III, and Katelyn Cook. Ruth also leaves behind seven great-grandchildren: Natalie, Briana, Jocelyn, Cyrus, Jacob, Jeremy Jr., and Elaina.
In addition to her parents and husband, Ruth was preceded in death by her daughter, Kathy Vicars, and siblings Edwin, Leroy, Joseph, and Robert Nesbitt, and Elsie Denney, along with other extended family members and friends.
Family and friends are invited to pay their respects during a visitation at West Nottingham Church, 1195 Firetower Road, Colora, MD 21917, on Friday, March 29, 2024 from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM. A celebration of Ruth’s life will be held at the church, on Saturday, March 30, 2024 at 11:00AM, where family and friends may begin visiting at 10:00AM.
