Russell Leo Ellis, Sr., age 87 of Newark, DE passed away on May 20, 2019. He was born on February 2, 1932 in Luray, VA to the late Gilbert Leo Ellis and Elenora M. (Sours) Ellis.
Russell graduated from the University of Maryland where he received his Bachelor’s degree in agriculture. He was a very successful business man. He owned green houses and grew hydroponic tomatoes and sold them to many local grocery stores. Russell also built and owned Newark Manor Nursing Home for many years until he later sold it in the late 1980’s. Russell was a member of Seventh Day Adventist Church for over 50 years. He maintained the grounds and always made sure that the lawn was in pristine condition. He enjoyed bowling and he proudly served in the United States Army and the Army Reserves.
Russell is survived by his wife of 4 ½ years, Peggy A. Ellis; son, Russell Ellis, Jr. (Bona); stepson, Stephen Powers; grandchildren: Christopher Ellis, Nicholas Ellis; Madison Leigh Powers, and Olivia Ann Powers; brother, Donald Ellis (Josey); and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his former wife, Rima Ellis and brother, Fred Ellis.
A celebration of Russell’s life will be held on Thursday, May 30, 2019 at 12:00 pm at Seventh Day Adventist Church, 3003 Millcreek Road, Wilmington, DE 19808. A visitation will begin at 11:00 am. Burial will follow at Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made payable to, “Wilmington Junior Academy” and sent in care of R.T. Foard & Jones, Inc.
