Ronald Alan Carr, 74, of Elkton, Maryland, passed away on July 11, 2024.
Ron was born on July 29, 1949 to Ralph Waldo Carr and Mary Joyce (née Stanhope) Carr. He grew up in West Deptford, New Jersey, and graduated from West Deptford High School in the Class of 1967.
Ron served honorably in the U.S. Navy as an electrical repairman aboard the USS Springfield. Following his military service, he worked for many years in multiple capacities with AndBro Company before beginning a second career as a long-haul trucker, transporting heavy construction supplies on an 18-Wheeler, flat-bed trailer for TMC. In his later years, he worked as an Uber driver. Throughout his career, Ron traveled extensively, visiting many different countries and states.
Ron’s parents were from Greenville, Maine and he maintained a deep connection to the Moosehead Lake Region throughout his life. He enjoyed visiting his extended family and appreciated the beautiful, mountainous landscape. He enjoyed boating, fishing, and always maintained birdfeeders.
Ron was most proud of his children and grandchildren. He provided unwavering support while always attending his grandchildren’s sporting events. He was a devoted life-long fan of the Philadelphia Eagles and 76ers. Happily, his Eagles won the Super Bowl in 2018.
Ron was incredibly strong. He was diagnosed with stage IV pancreatic cancer in July 2017. He fought courageously and endured for many years beyond his projected life expectancy. He passed away peacefully on the accentCare in-patient hospice unit at Christiana Care Wilmington Hospital. His final week was characterized by visits and phone calls from those he loved the most. His last three days were completely free from suffering. He ultimately was able to leave on his own terms, asking his son if he could “get out tomorrow,” and taking his last breath the following evening shortly after two of his children left, and while holding his son Brian’s hand.
Ron is survived by his children: Dr. Melanie Horning and her husband Christopher of Rising Sun, MD; Brian Carr and his wife Virginia of Minneapolis, MN; Michael Carr and his fiancée Anne Marie Whitmore of Conowingo, MD; and Matthew Carr and his wife Melissa of North East, MD. He is also survived by his beloved grandchildren: Jack Horning, Liam Horning, Henry Carr, Kate Carr, Jackson Carr, and Cameron Carr. He is also survived by his brother, James Carr of Madison, CT, ex-wives Kathleen Carr and Linda Carr, and extended family members.
In accordance with Ron’s wishes, services will be private. He is loved, appreciated, and will be missed.
