Robert W. Cumm, 91, of Rising Sun, MD, passed away January 5, 2012 at his son’s home in Mooresville, NC.
Born in Willsboro, NY on April 26, 1920, Bob was the son of the late Ira and Philmon Bascomb Cumm. He had a 20 year career in the U.S. Navy retiring in 1959 as a Boatswain Mate Chief and spent most of his career at sea. Bob was aboard the USS West Virginia at Pearl Harbor when his ship was sunk by the Japanese attack. He was a member of the Fleet Reserve and Mason Dixon American Legion Post 194. He was a talented woodworker and pursued that hobby throughout his life.
He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Irene Whitcomb Cumm of Rising Sun; three sons, Scott Cumm and his wife Sandra of Port Deposit, Randall Cumm and his wife Evelyn of Mooresville, NC and Jeffrey Cumm and his wife Nancy of Green Valley, AZ; 6 grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren and 1 great great grandchild. He was preceded in death by his eight brothers and sisters.
A service honoring Bob’s life will be held at R.T. Foard Funeral Home, P.A., 111 S. Queen St., Rising Sun, MD 21911 on Thursday January 12, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. Friends and family may call at the funeral home beginning at 1:00 p.m. Burial with military honors will be held at Brookview Cemetery.
