Robert Olan Thomas, Sr. age 75 of Newark, DE passed away on May 3, 2026. He was born on December 10, 1950 in Wilmington, DE to the late Olan Ray Thomas and Lorraine Mary (Tobin) Thomas.

Bob was very proud of his hometown. He was one of the founders of the Newark Historical Society and served in many positions, most notably as President for many years. He was passionate about learning about the history of the city of Newark and collected many historical articles and publications over the years. Bob loved being by the water, whether it was visiting the beach or pool in Ocean City, MD or sitting by the river watching the boats pass by. He also enjoyed spending time with his friends, and attending events in Ocean City. Their favorite hang out spot was the American Legion.

Bob is survived by his sister, Mary Lou McDowell and her husband, Robert; and nieces: Kathryn Murphy and her husband, Matthew and Sarah McDowell.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his son, Robert Thomas, Jr., his sister, Jean Thomas, and his wife, G. Jeaneatte Thomas.

A celebration of Bob’s life will be held on Tuesday, May 12, 2026 at 11:00 AM at R.T. Foard & Jones, Inc., 122 West Main Street, Newark, DE 19711. Family and friends may attend the viewing beginning at 10:00 AM, Burial will follow at Head of Christiana Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to “Newark Historical Society” and sent in care of the funeral home.
