Robert John Nickle, Sr., “Bob”, age 94 of Elkton, MD, passed away on Wednesday, April 25, 2018 at Caraway Manor Assisted Living in Elkton, MD. He was born on February 3, 1924, in Fremont, PA, to the late Samuel H. and Mary E. Dawson Nickle.
Bob was a graduate of Rising Sun High School. In his earlier life, he worked as a farmer alongside his father, and also farmed on his own farm. Later, he pursued a career as a life insurance agent with Home Beneficial Life Insurance Company, serving many families in Cecil County, and retiring after 28 years of service.
Bob loved gardening, collecting coins, collecting and tinkering with farm tractors, both real and toy, going to farm and steam engine shows, and most of all, spending time with all of his family. He enjoyed getting together with family to share a good meal and conversation. A man of great faith, Bob was a member of the North East United Methodist Church. He was also a member of the Historical Society of Cecil County, and the Cecil County Farm Museum.
He is survived by his three children, Bob Nickle, Jr. (Allyn), Donna Thomas (Ron), and Michele Smith (Steve); one sister, Ruth Law; three grandchildren, Dawn Rhoades, Brittney Becker and Cayley Smith; four great grandchildren, Jessica, Matthew, Gavin and Carson; one great great grandchild, David; a very special cousin and friend, Leonard Kirk, and many more special family members and friends.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, Shirley B. Schneider Nickle who passed away in August 2003, and two brothers, H. Earl Nickle and Samuel H. Nickle.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend Bob’s Celebration of Life services with visitation from 10 AM to 11 AM on Monday, April 30, 2018 at R.T. Foard Funeral Home, P.A., 111 South Queen Street, Rising Sun, MD 21911, followed by a service at 11AM. Interment will follow at Rosebank Cemetery in Calvert, MD.
