Robert H. Cameron, 88, of Rising Sun, MD, passed away peacefully July 5, 2014 surrounded by family.
Born on the family farm in Wakefield, PA on July 14, 1925, Bob was the son of the late Herman and Carrie Broome Cameron. He grew up working on the farm until he enrolled in Franklin and Marshall Academy at the age of 16. Upon graduation, he returned to the farm and his life changed when he met the love of his life, Phyllis Alger, at a baseball game in Rising Sun. They were married, and Bob drove an oil truck for his father-in-law’s company, Alger Oil, until he started running the company in 1950. He sold the company in 1984, and continued to work in the oil industry with Walker Oil, Griffith, and then Dixieland Energy until he finally retired in the summer of 2013.
Bob was an all around talented athlete, especially in basketball and baseball, and was scouted by the Pittsburgh Pirates. He was also an avid sports fan, following the Duke Blue Devils and even sponsoring local teams through Alger Oil.
Bob will be remembered as an integral and active part of the Rising Sun Business Community. He had a great deal of love and pride for his local community, and was even “elected” as the King of Rising Sun at the town’s Bicentennial celebration in 2010. He was an active member of the Rising Sun Business Association, was former Chairman of the Planning and Zoning Committee, and was part of the original Cecil County Selective Service Draft Board in the 1960s. He was also Past President of The Rising Sun Lions Club, served as District Governor in District 22B, was a Melvin Jones Fellow, and until recently was in demand for installation of officers in various Lions Clubs. In addition, he served at the National Oil Jobbers Council, The Cecil County Tax Appeals Board, and as Treasurer and Trustee Emeritus at the West Nottingham Academy.
Surviving are his two sons, Barry Cameron and his wife Diane of Rising Sun, and Robert Cameron and his wife Lisa of Elkton; 5 grandchildren, Cort Cameron and his wife Laverne, Carrie Schuckle and her husband Ken, Shannon Ballerino and her husband Keith, Amanda Vaughan and her husband Tom, and Kelsey Benner and her husband Holt; 9 great grandchildren; two nieces, Peggy Groff and Tina Payne; and a nephew, Larry Carroll.
