Richard (Dick) Grohs, of Newark, DE, passed away on Wednesday, March 30, 2022 at the home of his son and daughter-in-law in Poquoson, VA. He was 87 years old.

Dick was born on May 5, 1934 in Waterloo, IA to the late Rudolf and Helen Grohs. He resided in Newark, DE for over 60 years and enjoyed spending time with his children in Virginia and Pennsylvania.

Dick met the love of his life, Elizabeth (Betty) Grohs, while attending Kings College in Delaware. They were married on April 14, 1954. Dick was a licensed electrician and worked for over 30 years for the family business, Galloway Electric. Subsequently, he worked for DuPont for 15 years.

Always a positive person with a contagious smile, Dick loved to be surrounded by family and friends. His strong faith and trust in God set an example for all. Dick served as a deacon at Evangelical Presbyterian Church of Newark and enjoyed serving as a member of their choir. His love of sports spanned his entire life and he was able to excel in every sport he played. His particular love of golf provided him with years of enjoyment. Later in life Dick enjoyed spending time meeting and exercising with friends in both Delaware and Virginia.

Dick was predeceased by his beloved wife of 62 years, Betty, and will be greatly missed by his loving family; son Rich Grohs, and his wife, Deb, of Poquoson, VA; daughters, Cheryl Warrington of Langhorne, PA and Linda Burke, and her husband, Don, of Langhorne, PA; six grandchildren, J.r (Heidi), Kristin (Kevin), Josh (Mandie), Jake (Courtney), Ryan (Elora) and Daniel; and 13 great grandchildren. He is also survived by his two sisters, Ellen Grohs and Mary (Roger) Wheeler, both of Waterloo, IA.

The family will receive friends on Friday, April 8, 2022 from 9:30 to 10:30AM at the Evangelical Presbyterian Church of Newark, 308 Possum Park Road, Newark, DE. A memorial service will begin at 10:30AM. Burial will follow at Head of Christiana Presbyterian Cemetery in Newark, DE. My deepest condolences to your family. Dick was without a doubt one of the kindest men I have ever met. He always had a smile and a warm handshake for friends at EP. Many fond memories of being in bible study groups together and seeing him working at the Hercules Research center frequently, and later enjoying outdoor concerts at White Clay together. I was blessed to have worked with Dick at Galloway Electric for 20+yrs. He was a man of kindness, gentleness and demanded great respect as a man and fellow co-worker. Our friendship lasted until our last phone conversation at Christmas 2021 when we laughed and shared many great memories. Dick's death will leave a void in my and my wife Lydia's lives.

Dick Grohs became a part of the Galloway family when he married my aunt, Elizabeth, (Betty), Galloway. Growing up with his children, Richie, Cheryl and Linda, I found him to be kind, wise and dedicated to his wife and children. Based on his Christian faith, Uncle Dick seemed to have command of his life. He just had a joy and poise about him emphasizing right from wrong. What it means to be a decent human being. A man's temperament, knowledge and integrity inevitably shape his conduct. Uncle Dick was a man of good character and good character forms destiny that can be readily seen with his children and grandchildren.

Peace of mind is a call away. We’re here when you need us most.

I worked with Dick during his many years at DuPont.. We would always gather at the wood shop and have lunch.. He was always the best of what a man should be.. Always in a good mood, and just someone you could enjoy being with.. RIP Dick

Dick Grohs was one of the finest people that I knew at DuPont. He was fun to play golf with and just basically a very pleasant guy to be around. I feel very fortunate to have known him. My condolences to his family.

I worked with Dick when we were employed by DuPont and so enjoyed his stories, wide open smile, twinkling eyes, sense of humor and positive personality every day. One of his favorite things to share was where he and his wife had eaten out recently and I even saw him a couple of times at dinner with Betty. Such a beautiful couple. You meet many people throughout your life but only a few remain in your heart and mind for a lifetime, Dick was certainly one of those select few. My heart is emptier now but I’ll always still smile when thinking of him and hope he is once again with his dear wife.
