Richard L. Goodie of Rising Sun, MD, age 85, passed away Sunday, March 5, 2017. He was born in Rising Sun, MD on June 6, 1931 to the late William Clarence Goodie and Florence Louise (Wright) Goodie.

Richard was a Sargent in the United States Army serving in the Korean War. When he returned home, he dedicated his life to funeral service and was an active licensed funeral director for over sixty-one years. He loved his family, friends, community, U.S. history and art.

Richard is survived by his sister, Lillian Lieske of Rising Sun, MD, his sisters-in-law, Louise Goodie (Rising Sun, MD) and Janet Goodie (Hagerstown, MD), two nieces: Phyllis Shoemaker (Keith) of Princeton, NJ, and Debbie VanDyke (Brian) of Port Deposit, MD; seven nephews: Mike Lieske (Judy) of Estero, FL, Bob Lieske (Anne) of Phoenix, AZ, Ben Lieske (Jackie) of Middletown, DE, Howard Goodie (Charlotte) of Manassas, VA, Charles Goodie (Trish) of Middletown, MD, Marion Goodie, Jr. (Lisa) of Hagerstown, MD, and John Goodie (Yvonne) of Port Deposit, MD. He is also survived by his 9 great nieces and 11 great nephews as well as his 4 great-great nieces and 5 great-great nephews.

Services for Richard will be held privately at the family’s convenience. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made payable to the, “Community Fire Company of Rising Sun Maryland” and sent in care of R.T. Foard Funeral Home, P.A., P.O. Box 248, Rising Sun, MD 21911.

Rising Sun has lost a truly wonderful gentleman. He helped our family through the loss of our sister and our parents. I remember going to Ashby's soda fountain with his niece Phyllis after high school was over for cokes made by Richard. He was a beloved student in my Mom's art class for many years and a talented artist. He will be missed.

What a gracious and caring man, you were such a help to my family, in so many ways, when I lost my parents, you were there to comfort, and offer your support, at anytime. What a blessings to know you, and share a bit of life with you. Heavens doors have been opened, and the angels are singing, as they welcome you home.

Please know your family is in our thoughts and prayers. Richard was a wonderful person and a great friend to my parents (Bob and Mary Ross). His compassionate care for others in times of need was so natural for him and appreciated by all who came in contact with him.

Our world is now missing another wonderful man! I extend my condolences to those lucky enough to have been among Richard's family, friends and co-workers.
While my heart is heavy, I am pleased to know that my wonderful uncle,Grover Hawkins,now has his best friend in heaven with him. May they rest in peace.

Goodie Family So sorry for your loss. Richard was a true gentleman who would go out of his way to help others. I have known Richard since becoming a funeral director in 1970. He was a good friend. His memories will always be in our hearts. God has gained a special angel and he will look down on all of us with love. I'am sure that God has said well done thy good and faithful servant.

The world is now missing one incredible person and Rising Sun can never been the same! Mr. Goodie was such a kind soul and his absence will be felt by all. My memories also go way back to Ashby's soda fountain where Goodie made the best darn cherry cokes in the world!!! Richard heard all of our problems, never judged, offered advise if asked and never revealed your secrets! He was our friend and confidant! We love you and you made a difference in so many lives. In his other life in the funeral business, he also made life a little easier and helped so many families (including mine) get through some of the hardest times of their lives. Richard, what can I say, you were a wonderful friend and your kindness has shown all over Rising Sun MD for many years. Just think of all the ones waiting for you to cross into the Heavenly Gates to meet God and all your friends and family. Don't worry about anything, Kay Bailiff will be there to keep you updated on all the wonderful news you will see and find in that Beautiful place you have entered by now. Rising Sun has lost a great man. Richard was always so friendly and kind. Sorry to hear of his passing. It takes a special person to work in the Funeral industry and he did his job well.

What a very sad loss for everyone. He had a way of making a funeral or viewing not seem so bad. He always knew just what to say to make you feel better.

To Richard Goodie's family: My sincere condolences for the loss of this wonderful man. He was a great member of this community. He has been there for so many of us during our time of need. May he Rest In Peace. It was a privilege to know him. Recently I shared a story about him when he was working at Ashly's. There was a group of ladies around town, I believe they were called the Rising Sun Homemakers. They all participated in an annual "secret pal" gift giving. Richard was their go to person. They would buy their gifts at Ashly's. Then Richard would not only wrap them, he would deliver them. He kept lists so that no one got the same gift twice. So he always knew who everyone's Secret Pal was, but he never would tell. Again, Rest In Peace Richard, Rest In Peace..

Mr. Goodie. Thank you for your kindness that you extended to myself and my girls years ago. I know that I had told you before how much it meant to me but you went above and beyond what anyone else had. You always had a hug and a smile for me, no matter where we met. Fly high with the angels my friend, you deserve those wings.

Ritchie was one of a kind. He was always smiling and made things just a little easier when having to attend a service.

Mr. Goodie, you took care of just about everyone in my family and also many friends with love. You just seemed to appear like an Angel to hold a shoulder if you somehow sensed one was breaking down due to our loved ones passing. You were so kind and reverent and really made our loved ones be the image that remains in our mind that we want. I hope your journey is peaceful to the stars above and as I go outside IN texas you will brighten it and light the way for us when its our time . Love you
