Richard D. “Tucker” Mackie, age 90, of Elkton, MD passed away on October 27, 2013. Tucker was born in Warwick, MD on December 30, 1922 to the late Osborne Sentman Mackie & Josephine (Aiken) Mackie.
Tucker graduated from West Nottingham Academy and the University of Delaware. He was a lifelong farmer and he served in the Maryland House of Delegates, Cecil County from 1959-1982. Tucker was a founding member of the Democrat Club of Cecil County and the Elk Creeks Preservation Society. He was also a member of the SAR- Sons of the American Revolution, Cecil County Health Planning Committee, member & President of the Cecil County Young Democrats, also on the Board of Directors & a member of the Community Chest. Tucker was also a charter member of the National Society for the Prevention of Blindness, Campaign Chair of the March of Dimes and the Community Chest. Member of the Cecil County Historical Society, Cecil County Hunter’s Association and the Susquehanna State Park Advisory Board from 1983-1984 and 1987-1990. Tucker was involved in many other state and community wide organizations.
Tucker enjoyed traveling to Scotland and he loved attending the Scottish games at Fair Hill, MD. He was passionate about Democratic Politics and Land Preservation in Cecil County. Tucker helped initiate the purchase of the duPont Property in Fair Hill Maryland for the Natural Resource Management Area.
He cherished his time sitting in his backyard enjoying the view above the Little Elk Creek as well as spending time in his vegetable garden. At Christmas time Tucker would always supply friends with oysters from Cambridge, MD.
He is survived by twenty – five nieces & nephews.
He is predeceased by his siblings; Osborne Mackie, Elizabeth Mackie, Wilhemina Unruh, Eleanor Foltz, Jean Almony, Pauline Strahorn, F. Thomas Mackie, Joseph Mackie, David Mackie and Catherine Mackie and his faithful Chesapeake Bay Retriever “Kirby”.
A visitation will be held 5-8pm on Friday, November 1, 2013 at 392 Little Elk Creek Road, Elkton, MD 21921. A service will be held 11:00 am on Saturday, November 2, 2013 at the Rock Presbyterian Church, Corner of Rt. 273 & Rock Church Road, Fair Hill, MD. Burial to follow at Sharps Cemetery, Fair Hill, MD.
