Rebecca I. Coates, beloved teacher and mother, passed away Friday, February 25, 2022 at her home in Port Deposit, MD. She was 79 years old.
Known for her amazing baking and passion for teaching kindergartners for thirty years, Becky was born to parents George and Mary Murray of Harford County, MD in 1942. Becky earned a B.S. in 1973 from the University of Delaware and taught at Rising Sun Elementary, Bay View Elementary, and finished her career at Ocean City Elementary in Ocean City, MD. She was active in 4-H and won Maryland Dairy Princess as a young woman in 1962.
Becky is survived by her husband of 47 years, Joseph H. Coates, Jr.; five children: Jennifer Owen Basener, Joseph H. Coates, III, JoAnn Coates Hunter, Lyn Kunda, and Whitney Bedwell Price as well as three grandchildren: Carl Kunda, Sadie Hunter, and Samuel Hunter. Becky is preceded in death by her daughter, Mary Adele Owen, her parents, and two sisters.
A memorial service to celebrate Becky’s life will be announced at a later date. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions in Becky’s honor may be made payable to “Alzheimer’s Association” and sent in care of R.T. Foard Funeral Home, P.O. Box 248, Rising Sun, MD 21911.
