Ralph J. Speakman, Jr., age 87, of Elkton, MD, passed away on Tuesday, March 11, 2014 at his home surrounded by his family. He was born on November 29, 1926, in Elkton, MD to the late Ralph J., Sr., and Ann (Chidester) Speakman.
After serving his country in the Army Air Corps in WWII, Ralph returned home where he entered into the insurance business and started the successful Speakman Insurance Agency. He not only served his community by offering insurance, but also real estate as well. Ralph was a member of the Free Masons Harmony Lodge and the North East Lions Club. He also enjoyed flying and owned several planes throughout the years. An accomplished musician, Ralph enjoyed playing guitar for his family and friends. He was a member of the Newark Baptist Church. His greatest role was that of loving husband to his late wife Doris of 68 years, and loving father, grandfather, and great grandfather to his family, all who will miss him dearly.
He is survived by his daughters Hope Given, of Elkton, MD, Donna Moux (Floyd Greenway) of Elkton, MD, and Ann Speakman-Kobza, (Richard) of Dover, DE; grandchildren Thomas Given III (Jamie), Joshua Given (Kizzie), Aaron Given ( Rachel), Matthew Given (Danielle), Gabriel Harvey ( Michele), Tammy Sumner (Rick), Heather Wagoner ( Keith), Spencer Williams (Alice), Liz Thompson ( Kris), and Joyce Simmons ( Eric); and 18 great grandchildren.
A service will be held at 11AM on Saturday, March 15, 2014 at Newark Baptist Church, 6011 Telegraph Rd., Elkton, MD 21921. Friends and family may visit one hour prior beginning at 10AM. Burial following the service will be held at Union Cemetery in Pleasant Hill, MD. In lieu of flowers, memorial contribution checks can be made to Newark Baptist Church and sent c/o R.T.
