Capt. Ralph H. Hazel, Jr., 74, of Chesapeake City, MD, passed away on February 11, 2017, in Newark, DE. Born on October 25, 1942, in Wilmington, DE, he was the son of the late Ralph and Marguerite Hazel of Chesapeake City. Capt. Hazel was a sixth-generation Chesapeake City resident, living his last 48 years in Port Herman, where he enjoyed his dock and various boats. A graduate of Bohemia Manor High School (1960), Salisbury State University (1964, B.S.), and Morgan State University (1967, M.S.), Capt. Hazel taught Anatomy & Physiology, Microbiology, and General Chemistry at Delaware Technical & Community College in Dover, DE, for 25 years. He also taught Botany and General Biology at Cecil Community College and was a science teacher for the Baltimore Board of Education at Dundalk High School. With his wife of 50 years, Clare, Capt. Hazel operated and owned Miss Clare Tours, which gave sightseeing tours of Back Creek and the Elk River from Chesapeake City on the 42′ vessel, Miss Clare. He was a U.S. Merchant Marine Officer, Master of Motor Vessel 200 gross tons, with a MED-PIC (Medical Person In Charge) endorsement. In addition to Clare, he is survived by his daughter, Mary Clare Kimber; son-in-law, Aaron Kimber; grandson, Larson Kimber; granddaughter, Lydia Kimber; and brother, Robert Hazel.
