Captain Phyllis “Suzie” Louise Barlow, USNR retired, of Centerport Long Island, NY, passed away peacefully in Colora, MD, on November 23, 2022, at the age of 93. She was born on September 5, 1929 in Wilmington, DE, to the late Henry E. Barlow and Sarah E. (MacAvaney) Barlow.
Phyllis grew up in Wilmington, DE and graduated from P.S. Dupont HS. In 1947 she attended the Delaware Hospital School of Nursing and in 1950 she began her career as an Operating Nurse at the Dealware Hospital. On November 30, 1951 she enlisted in the U.S. Navy- Navy Nurse Corps serving as a Navy Nurse in Jacksonville, FL and then San Diego, CA. As an appointed LTJG she transferred to the U.S. Naval Reserves in May, 1954. Phyllis continued college and earned her M.A. Nursing Service in Administration at the Teachers College, Columbia University in 1958. After graduating she started at the Huntington Hospital as an Assistant Director of Nursing. She continued to proudly serve her country in the U.S. Navy Nurse Corps Reserves for 36 years and retired in 1989 as a Captain in the U.S. Navy Nurse Corps Reserves. Shortly after her retirement in the USNR, she retired with 33 years of service from Huntington Hospital in 1991as Director of Nursing (Vice-President of Nursing).
Phyllis was an avid world traveler, making it a true lifestyle. She was passionate about boating and fishing on the Long Island Sound and loved to travel to the city to attend the opera or a Broadway show. She lived a wonderful and fulfilling life in Centerport Long Island, NY with her life-long friend Billie Allen. In 2012 shortly after her dear friend passed away, she moved to Colora, MD, to be with her family.
Phyllis is survived by five siblings: Sarah E. Ford, John T. Barlow, Norman W. (Maralee)Barlow, Sharon R. (Thomas) Zickgraf and Gail F. (Richard) Hertach; as well as many nieces, nephews and extended family members.
In addition to her parents, Phyllis was preceded in death by three siblings: Henry E. Barlow III, Martha S. Webb and Aaron M. Barlow.

Services will be held at 11AM on Saturday, December 3, 2022 at R.T. Foard Funeral Home, 111 South Queen Street, Rising Sun, MD, 21911 where family and friends may begin visiting at 10AM. A graveside service will be held on December 9, 2022, at 11AM at the Huntington Station Rural Cemetery in Huntington, NY. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to “Kings Assembly of God”.
