Peggy Lee Simmers, 82, of Rising Sun, MD went home to be with her Lord on Saturday, September 23, 2017 surrounded by her loving family. Born in Lebanon, VA in November 1934, she was the daughter of the late Daniel Webster and Eula Monk Akers.
Peggy graduated from Rising Sun High School in 1952. She worked at Cecil National Bank in Port Deposit, MD, until the birth of her children. Peggy had a heart for family. She often said, “There is nothing like being a grandmother!” Her love united all and created a place for each person to call home at Carron Hill Farm. She spoiled her family rotten with her famous rolls and sticky buns. Front and center at sporting events and concerts, Peggy was a champion of each family member’s success. Everyone knew they were loved by Peggy.
Over the years, her service extended outward as Swimnastics Instructor at the YMCA, Helping Hands Decorator for Sandy Cove, and a Sunday School and Bible School Teacher at Pleasant View Baptist Church and Ebenezer United Methodist Church. She loved the Lord, and was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother.
She is survived by her loving husband of 64 years, William Earl Simmers, daughters Terri Brady, Rising Sun, MD, Kathy Bires and husband Tim, Holland, PA, and Marie Barker and husband Joey, Rising Sun, MD. Grandchildren include Adam Brady and wife Lauren, Abbey Moores and husband Tim, Alicia McDowell and husband Mike, Anna Massimiano and husband Dominic, Jordan Bires and wife Gia, Nicholas Bires and fiancé Heather Edwards, Kristofer Bires, Alexander Bires, Casey Barker, Ceara Barker, and Devan Barker, and great grandchildren Clara McDowell and Brinley Bires.
In addition to her parents, Peggy was preceded in death by brother Frank Akers, sister Virginia Simmons and her granddaughter, Amy Brady.
Peggy had a wonderful ministry of card writing and encouraging words. The family asks that you follow Peggy’s lead and send an encouraging card or note to someone, letting them know they are in your thoughts and prayers. Tell your loved ones that you love them every single day.
We would like to thank our wonderful caregivers and friends that have blessed our family so much through this journey.
Visitation for family and friends will be held on Friday, September 29, 2017 from 6 to 8 p.m. at R. T. Foard Funeral Home, 111 S. Queen St, Rising Sun. A one hour visitation will be held on Saturday, September 30, 2017 from 10 to 11 at Ebenezer United Methodist Church, 1072 Ebenezer Church Rd., Rising Sun MD, and the funeral services will be immediately following.

Aunt Peggy was always so welcoming to me. When I'd visit Kathy and Terri (before Marie was born!), she'd invite me to the table like one of her immediate family. One time, I (stupidly) slid down the sliding board in their backyard while holding a baton. One of the rubber tips was missing and I really scraped up my stomach and dear Aunt Peggy came a-running. She was a great aunt and caring person. I can see her loving spirit in all her children and grand-children!

I met Earl and Peggy Simmers last December when they hired me to be a caregiver for Miss Peggy. Miss Piggy love to everyone, and it wasn't long before I felt like another member of the family. Earl I miss Peggy loved and served the Lord, and trained their family to do the same.
