Paul Eugene Keeley Sr., affectionately known as Gene, passed away peacefully at the age of 90 on June 10th, 2024, in Chesapeake City, MD. Born on May 1st, 1934, in Newark, DE, Gene was the beloved son of the late Rose and Paul Keeley. He was a devoted husband to his wife, Mary, for 67 wonderful years.
Gene was a proud graduate of Newark High School, Class of 1952. Following his graduation, he began his career as an engine repairman in garages near Glasgow, DE. In 1962, he joined the State of Delaware as an inspector for the Department of Weights and Measures, eventually rising to the position of Director. Gene’s dedication and excellence in his work earned him the title of Department of Agriculture Employee of the Year in 1989, and he was honored by the National Bureau of Standards for his outstanding service. He retired in 1991 after a distinguished career.
A man of many talents and passions, Gene loved spending time boating on the Chesapeake Bay with Mary. Together, they traveled extensively, visiting 47 states and creating countless cherished memories. Gene was a fixture at his grandchildren’s sporting events, where he was their biggest supporter. Known for his mechanical and carpentry skills, Gene could fix almost anything, earning him a reputation as the family’s go-to handyman. He also took great pride in being the family historian and keeper of the family tree.
Gene’s warmth, kindness, and joyful spirit left a lasting impression on everyone who had the pleasure of knowing him. He will be deeply missed by all.
Gene was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Mary Keeley; his parents, Rose and Paul Keeley; and his sister, Dorothy Lindamood. He is survived by his son, Paul (Gene) Keeley Jr., and his wife, Debi, of Elkton, MD; his granddaughter, Danielle Burns, and her husband, Mike; his grandson, Paul Keeley III, and his fiancée, Kara; and his great-grandson, Brewer Burns. He also leaves behind a large and loving extended family and many dear friends.
A visitation will be held on Monday, June 17th, 2024, from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at R.T. Foard Funeral Home, 318 George Street, Chesapeake City, MD. A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, June 18th, 2024, at 11:00 AM at the same location, with an hour of visitation prior to the service.
