The family of Narrie Talbot Painter Herr announces her peaceful passing at age 98 in Elkton MD on May 29, 2026 from Alzheimer’s and dementia. She was born in 1927, and raised in Warwick Township, Chester County PA. She grew up on an egg farm with her parents, William Painter Jr. and Grace McCord Painter, and 11 siblings in a very close-knit family.
She married Aldus Wayne Herr in April 1945. He had been a musician, and even played his Martin guitar and sang on the Grand Old Opry Stage in Nashville in his early years. She saw what that life entailed, and said that he had to choose her or that music life. He chose her, but continued to entertain his family with his music. They lived in West Chester PA in their early years, welcoming a son, Edward Herr (Sr) while living there. They later built their home on Georgia Avenue in Crystal Beach by themselves, first as a shore home, and then lived there year-round. Her remaining years were spent in Elkton.
She is survived by one brother, Jesse Painter (PA), her son Edward Herr Sr. (Christina), granddaughter Melissa Wesley (Cornelius), grandson Edward Herr Jr. (Becca), 8 great-grandchildren, Brittany, Jamie, Jalen, Olivia, Allysia, Colter, Harley and Melaney, and a great number of great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Aldus, her parents and 10 siblings including Ada, Irene, Minnie, Virginia, Grace, Hervey, Gross, Hunter, Robert and Frederick, and great-great-grandchild Rue Wesley.
She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She always thought of others first, herself last. She lived a life of service to others, including family, community, church and God. She participated in many Bible School events. She spent many hours at practices and games for her grandchildren Melissa and Eddie, and great-grandchildren Brittany and Jamie at the Little League fields, basketball games, lacrosse games, and football games all the way into college football at UD.
She and Aldus, (aka Smokey) spent their free time swimming at the beach, riding mopeds and playing tennis in Cecilton, bowling in leagues in Elkton and traveling around the country. During the gas crisis back in the 1970s, she and Aldus bought our red GTO with an air scoop hood and 4-barrel exhaust, because it was too expensive to operate. So Narrie enjoyed cruising down the highway in her GTO. Narrie and Smokey often walked down the street, hand in hand to the top of the hill at Crystal Beach to socialize with their friends and neighbors, and enjoy the panoramic beautiful sunsets, or watch the passing ships. In her later years she spent many hours working on puzzles, most often with Karen Bollman, her caregiver for several years.
She loved to cook and bake prior to her struggle with dementia, especially her Chicken Pot Pie, and her wafer-thin sugar cookies.
She suffered from the effects of Alzheimer’s and dementia in her later years, so in lieu of flowers, may we suggest contributions to the Alzheimer’s Association. The staff at Elkton Nursing and Rehab often spoke very highly of her, and how much they enjoyed taking care of her. Some even bought her little gifts at various times. She has always had a very sweet disposition, and even at this stage of her life was a joy to be around they said. She often said that she wanted to go home when we visited, and now she has.
A celebration of life will be held at R.T. Foard Funeral Home, P.A., 259 East Main Street, Elkton, MD 21921 on Friday June 5, 2026 at 2:00 PM. Visitation begins at 1:00 PM. All who knew her are welcome to attend. Burial will be held privately on a later date at Cecilton Methodist Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made payable to “Alzheimer’s Association” and sent in care of the funeral home.
