Shirley A. Baker, a beloved member of the Rising Sun, MD community, passed away on February 18, 2024, at the age of 83. Born on April 26, 1940, in Oxford, PA, Shirley was the cherished daughter of the late Eldon and Edna Saunders and the devoted wife of the late Robert R. Baker.
In her youth, Shirley was an industrious entrepreneur, known for her dedication in founding and operating the Doggie Clips grooming business. Her love for animals extended to her community, where she provided care and affection to pets beyond her own.
Shirley’s talents were not confined to her professional life; she was also a skilled homemaker celebrated for her culinary delights, particularly her famous apple cobbler enjoyed by many at family gatherings. Her home was a welcoming sanctuary, filled with warmth, laughter, and delicious aromas.
Beyond her entrepreneurial and homemaking pursuits, Shirley found joy in simple pleasures. She was an avid reader, finding solace and enrichment in the articles in magazines, and she had a knack for finding treasures during her shopping adventures.
Above all, Shirley’s greatest joy was found in her role as a mother. She dedicated herself wholeheartedly to nurturing and guiding her daughter, Cathy, with love and unwavering support, leaving behind a legacy of kindness and strength.
Shirley’s faith was a cornerstone of her life, and she found comfort and community as a faithful member of the Oxford Church of God.
In addition to her husband and parents, Shirley is preceded in death by her sisters, Arlene Rhodes and Linda Saunders.
She is survived by her loving daughter, Cathy Baker, along with her four brothers: Alan, Nelson, Galen, and Lowell Saunders, and her two sisters: Mary Delp and Lois Castagna. Shirley will be dearly missed by a host of other relatives and friends.
Per her wishes, all services will be private, allowing her family to honor her memory in a manner that reflects her spirit. Though Shirley has left this earthly realm, her memory will forever live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved her, a testament to a life well-lived. May she rest in eternal peace.
