Jewel Charlotte Biggs, age 101, of Silver Spring, MD, passed away on Wednesday, February 8, 2023. She was born in Washington, D.C. on July 10, 1921, to the late August Graf and Olga (Kueffer) Graf. Everyone who knew Jewel loved her. Her parents certainly gave her the correct name as she was a precious Jewel. She always put the needs of others ahead of her own.
Jewel was a Christian Scientist and was a member of the local Silver Spring church as well as The Mother Church. Besides studying the Bible, she enjoyed a variety of activities like gardening, bowling, baking, roller skating, walking and biking. In fact, she continued biking until the age of 80. Jewel especially loved the beach and enjoyed staying at the family home in Ocean City, NJ. She also liked to go on Caribbean cruises and go to local dinner theaters. She loved animals and often kept pets, including four Norwegian Elkhounds over the years. Her greatest joy in life was spending time with her family, whom she loved dearly.
Jewel is survived by her daughter, Darlene Charlotte Newsom and her husband, Jim; son, Gary Leonard Biggs; two grandchildren: Elizabeth Jane Newsom and James William Newsom, Jr. and his wife Dorothy; and two great-grandchildren: Violet Jewel Newsom and Hope Joan Newsom.
In addition to her parents, Jewel is preceded in death by her husband, Leonard Morgan Biggs, Jr.
Services will be held at a later date as well as an inurnment at Arlington National Cemetery.
