Our beloved mother, Janet Gail Royal Kammerer, a true coal miner’s daughter from Port Deposit, Maryland, passed away on September 2, 2024. Born in Elkhorn, West Virginia, on November 23, 1937, Janet lived in Ennice, North Carolina, during her youth, where her father farmed and made homemade molasses. At around fourteen, she moved to Maryland to help her sister and spent the remainder of her life there.
Janet devoted most of her life to homemaking but also cleaned homes, babysat, and worked at Stancill’s Gravel Pit and American Homes. She was passionate about sewing, creating quilts, baby doll clothes, and comfort bears. Janet also built miniature dollhouses for family and friends and was an avid card sender, bringing joy to many with her thoughtful notes. She loved singing and recorded an album with her brother titled “Lee Royal and the Sawdusters.” Additionally, Janet enjoyed birdwatching, particularly Bluebirds and Hummingbirds.
She cherished family gatherings, especially those involving crabs.
Janet is survived by her daughters Sandra Kay Testerman (Joseph) of Conowingo, Maryland; Sheila Gail Ellison (James) of Rising Sun, Maryland; Sharon Ann Kammerer of Elkton, Maryland; and Tawnya Shawn Lieske (Herman) of Palm Bay, Florida. She was preceded in death by her husband George Marion Kammerer and her son Steven Randall Kammerer. Janet will be remembered fondly by her twelve grandchildren, twenty-five great-grandchildren, siblings Linda Nichols and Wanda Brooks, and many nieces and nephews who loved her dearly.
