Eleanor Marie Gonzales, age 85, of Elkton, Maryland, passed away peacefully on May 6, 2025, surrounded by the love of her family. Born on December 27, 1939, in Atlas, Pennsylvania, she was the cherished daughter of the late George and Mary (Dascani) Cellitti.
The daughter of an Italian immigrant, Eleanor was a proud first-generation American who embraced her Italian heritage with deep pride. Raised as an only child, she was instilled with the values of faith, family, and hard work—principles that would guide her throughout her life. It was during high school that Eleanor met the love of her life, Alexander Vincent Gonzales, Sr. Their romance blossomed quickly, and the two eloped to Cecil County to begin a life together that would span more than six decades.
While Alexander worked to provide for the family, Eleanor devoted herself to raising their children and managing the household with grace and devotion. Once their children were older, she joined her husband in their family-run insurance agency, where she worked alongside him as an insurance agent. Together, they built not just a successful business, but a lasting legacy of dedication and partnership.
Eleanor was known for her warm hospitality and her incredible talents in the kitchen. Her home was the heart of the family, and Sunday dinners were a treasured tradition—full of laughter, love, and her famous spaghetti and meatballs, a recipe that no one could ever quite duplicate. She was also known for keeping an immaculate home, a reflection of the care and pride she took in everything she did.
Outside of the home, Eleanor was a woman of energy and enthusiasm. She was an avid bowler who bowled almost every day and truly loved the sport. Bowling brought her joy, friendship, and a sense of community. She also loved to shop—especially with family. Whether it was a quick outing or an all-day adventure, Eleanor could shop till she dropped, and she did so with the same joy and zest that she brought to every part of her life.
A devout Catholic, Eleanor was a faithful member of Holy Angels Roman Catholic Church in Newark, Delaware, where she found comfort and community throughout the years. Her kindness, strength, and unwavering love for her family left a lasting impression on everyone who knew her.
Eleanor was preceded in death by her parents, her cherished son, Alex Gonzales, Jr., and her beloved husband, Alexander Vincent Gonzales, Sr., who passed away just days before her, on April 30, 2025. Their bond was unbreakable in life and continues into eternity.
She is survived by her loving daughter, Lisa Vible, and her husband William; her devoted son, Eric Gonzales; three grandchildren who brought her great joy: Ashley Vible, Lacy Vible and her partner Shelby, and Allison Gonzales and her husband Bryan Lanshe; and two beloved great-grandchildren, Alaina Vible and Hunter Vible.
A Mass of Christian Burial celebrating the lives of both Eleanor and Alexander Gonzales will be held on Tuesday, May 20, 2025, at 11:00 AM at Holy Angels Roman Catholic Church, 82 Possum Park Road, Newark, DE 19711. Family and friends are invited to visit beginning at 10:00 AM. Interment will follow at All Saints Cemetery, where Eleanor and Alexander will be laid to rest side by side.
Eleanor’s life was a testament to love, resilience, and family. She will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
