Thomas Andrew Stansfield, Sr., 87, of Elkton, Maryland, passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by the love of his family and friends on July 9, 2025. Born on December 5, 1937, in Baltimore City, Maryland, he was the son of the late Vernon and Polya (née Kowall) Stansfield and the devoted husband of 52½ years to Joyce (née Cox) Stansfield.
Tom was a 1956 graduate of Milford Mill High School. He proudly served in the U.S. Army Reserve from 1956 to 1959 and began his professional career with Western Electric. In 1963, he graduated from the Maryland State Police Academy and went on to serve his community with dedication and integrity as a Maryland State Trooper for 25 years. Following his retirement from the force, he continued serving the public as a District Court bailiff for 13 years before fully retiring.
He was an active member of the Maryland State Police Alumni Association and the Maryland Troopers Association. A man of deep faith, Tom was a dedicated member of Trinity United Methodist Church, where he served on various committees including the Staff-Parish Relations Committee (SPRC) and the Board of Trustees. He especially enjoyed the camaraderie of the men’s fellowship dinners.
Tom had a lifelong love of the outdoors. He was an avid hunter and fisherman who cherished time spent in nature. He will be remembered for his steadfast devotion to family, his strong moral character, and his warm and generous spirit. Tom had abundant humor, often teasing with friends and family. Above all he loved his family, especially seeing his granddaughters. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
In addition to his beloved wife, Joyce, he is survived by his son, Thomas “Andy” Stansfield, Jr., and his wife Kelli; and his cherished granddaughters: Hallie, Ella, Eden, and Quinn Stansfield.
A celebration of Tom’s life will be held on Tuesday, July 15, 2025 at 11:00 AM at Trinity United Methodist Church, 450 3rd Street, Chesapeake City, Maryland 21915. The family will begin receiving friends at 10:00 AM. Interment will follow at St. Paul’s Cemetery in Earleville, Maryland.
