Alfred Garret Lawler, 89, of Newark, DE, peacefully passed away on January 9, 2024. Born on May 6, 1934, in Brooklyn, NY, he was the son of the late Joseph and Margaret Lawler (nee, Jackson) and the devoted husband of the late Marcella Lawler.
Alfred served his country honorably in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, continuing his service and retiring as a respected member of the Delaware Air National Guard. A proud member of the UAW, he dedicated his career to Chrysler Corporation as an automotive quality control inspector until his well-deserved retirement.
In his younger years, Alfred found joy in roller skating and dancing, which led him to meet his beloved wife. He was an enthusiastic collector of HO Model Trains and Historic Firearms, while also expressing his creativity through photography. Together with Marcella, he explored the country, creating cherished memories along the way.
Alfred took great pride in his Irish heritage, finding solace in the melodies of Celtic music. He was a member of the Ancient Order of Hibernians, the largest and oldest Irish Catholic Organization in America. He was deeply involved in the VFW, Post 475, where he volunteered as an Honor Guard. Throughout his life, he remained actively engaged in various veterans’ causes and charities.
Alfred is preceded in death by his wife, Marcella Lawler, and his parents, Joseph and Margaret Lawler; Grandson, Michal McDermott; brothers: Dennis F. Lawler, Robert Lawler, Joseph Lawler, William Lawler, John Lawler, Ed Lawler, Sonny Lawler, Daniel Lawler, Peter Lawler, Thomas Lawler, James Lawler and sister, Emma E. Sarkisian.
He is survived by daughter, Ann Lawler and her husband Ronald Weaverling; granddaughters Nicole McDermott, Jennifer McDermott; grandson, Matthew McDermott; sisters: Joan Corton and Mary Ann Sabatino.
A visitation to celebrate Alfred’s life will be held on Wednesday, January 17, 2024, from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at R. T. Foard and Jones Funeral Home – 122 West Main Street, Newark, DE. A Mass of Christian Burial will be conducted at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church – 200 East Main Street, Newark, DE, on Thursday, January 18, 2024, at 11:00 AM, with a visitation offered one hour prior to the service. The final resting place will be at Delaware Veterans Cemetery on February 16, 2024, at 1:00 PM.
