Michael “Mike” Steven Zale, age 68, of Elkton, MD, passed away on Friday, May 15, 2026. He was born on July 25, 1957 in Wilmington, DE to the late John Stanley Zale and Rose Marie (Julian) Zale.
Mike, lovingly known as the “Man of Steel”, was a gracious, kindhearted, generous, and grounded man whose larger-than-life spirit left a lasting impression on everyone fortunate enough to know him. A true free spirit, he lived life on his own terms, embracing every adventure and making memories wherever the road would take him. Mike had a deep love for traveling the country, especially the wide-open landscapes of the West. Whether chasing sunsets, discovering new places, or simply enjoying the freedom of the open road, he found joy in every mile. He believed life was meant to be lived fully, and leaned on his strong faith in God to guide him.
He enjoyed the simple pleasures in life – cold beers, good music, and playing the drums. In his younger years, Mike played football, was in the marching band, and was an avid photographer. His adventurous spirit led him to work alongside and travel with the circus, adding even more colorful stories to a life already full of them. He also spent time selling used cars for the brother of the famed daredevil Evel Knievel, an experience he always enjoyed recounting. An enthusiastic rider and driver, he took great joy in his foreign motorcycles and sports cars. He was especially fond of classic Triumph motorcycles. He cherished the thrill, craftsmanship, and timeless appeal of such elegant machines.
All throughout his life, Mike enjoyed following and cheering on college football teams and professional baseball teams. He loved classic cinema, the vintage age of television, and found immense joy in the brilliant, irreverent humor of Mystery Science Theater 3000. He had a deep affection for their smart, riffing style that turned “so bad it’s good” entertainment and everyday absurdity into hilarious commentary. Mike worked for the City of Newark as a Lineman for 25 years. His dedication to his community did not stop after his retirement. Mike was a delivery driver for Chesapeake Publishing and Quantum Controls and later worked for the Town of Charlestown.
Mike loved his country deeply and carried a strong sense of pride and appreciation for the freedoms and opportunities it provided. Yet above all else, his greatest joy and proudest role was being a father and grandfather. He was deeply involved in his daughter’s life. He cherished every moment spent cheering her on in softball and volleyball. His love for his family was unwavering, and nothing meant more to him than his daughter, his son-in-law and grandchildren.
Mike will be remembered for his strength, his adventurous soul, his warm heart, and the way he made people feel welcome and valued. His stories, laughter, and unforgettable spirit will live on in the hearts of all who loved him.
Mike is survived by his daughter, Melissa Keys, and her husband, John; grandson’s: Aiden Keys and Rhys Keys; his mother, Rose Marie Zale; and his sister, Pamela Thompson. In addition to his father, Mike is preceded in death by his brother, John Zale, and sister Donna Marie Zale.
A celebration of Mike’s life will be held on June 16, 2026 at 11AM at R.T. Foard & Jones, Inc., 122 West Main Street, Newark, DE 19711, where friends and family may begin visiting at 10AM. A burial will follow at All Saints Cemetery.
