Michael Joseph Lawson, 67, of Lewes, Delaware, passed away peacefully on August 5, 2026, surrounded by family and friends after a courageous, though brief, battle with terminal cancer.
Born on November 9, 1958, in Baltimore, Maryland, Michael was the beloved son of Claude and Dolores Lawson, who both preceded him in death.
Michael devoted his life to serving others through a distinguished career in law enforcement.
He proudly served as a Maryland State Trooper, working both on patrol and as a K-9 handler until his retirement in 1998. His dedication to public service continued after relocating to Delaware, where he served as a Sergeant with the Delaware Capitol Police and later as a Constable with Christiana Care Health System.
Beyond his career, Michael was known for his kindness and huge generous heart.
He treasured his family, valued his friendships, and never hesitated to lend a helping hand to those in need.
Whether offering support to a neighbor, sharing time with loved ones, or enjoying the beauty of nature and the outdoors, Michael lived a life defined by compassion, humility, and service.
His gentle spirit and selfless nature left a lasting impression on everyone who had the privilege of knowing him.
In keeping with his lifelong commitment to helping others, Michael made the extraordinary decision to donate his body to science through the University of Delaware Anatomical Gift Program. His final act of generosity will help educate and train future generations of healthcare professionals, ensuring that his legacy of service continues for years to come.
Michael is lovingly remembered by his daughter, Heidi Lawson; his very special friend, Tracey West-Ney, and her son, Matthew; his sister, Donna Stetka; his niece, Kelly; his nephews, Michael and John in addition to a large circle of extended family members and lifelong friends who will deeply miss his kindness, wisdom, and friendship.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that memorial donations be made in Michael’s honor to the University of Delaware Anatomical Gift Program.
A celebration of Michael’s life will be announced at a later date.
