I liked Mike and learned a lot from him. He came to our in CA for dinner once. It was the first time Jen made peach cobbler. Hahah! Once 3 of us were golfing and we all hit horrible second shots. Mike looked round surveying the area and declared “Field mulligan!” Hahahaha!

Jackie Daly Johnson left a message on February 5, 2024:
Our sympathy goes out to Mike’s family, friends, and colleagues at this difficult time. My family and I have known Mike for over 30 years, since he first joined DuPont and jokingly declared himself my father’s unknown son at one of the legendary DuPont social events. We worked as customer and supplier, and later he and I as colleagues on AAMI and ISO committees and industry projects, logging countless hours in meetings as well as editing work sessions that burned through phone batteries. Mike was inspirational and innovative, whether figuring out a regulation or pirating a hotel bedsheet to use as a projection screen at an international meeting. Mike loved his family fiercely, and supported his friends and colleagues endlessly. More than anything Mike was the embodiment of perseverance, whether utilizing his unique ability to make science simple to understand, or bringing together divergent opinions, or mastering a recipe, personally and professionally, across the vast array of life’s challenges. We are so fortunate to have had him in our lives, and will sorely miss his presence. Rest well dear friend, yours was the definition of a successful life…. The man is a success who has lived well, laughed often, and loved much; who has gained the respect of intelligent men and the love of children; who has filled his niche and accomplished his task; who leaves the world better than he found it, whether by an improved poppy, a perfect poem, or a rescued soul; who never lacked appreciation of earth's beauty or failed to express it; who looked for the best in others and gave the best he had. Robert Louis Stevenson

I had the honor and great pleasure of having worked for and with Mike for 13 years. He was always just larger than life yet humble ....at times! He will be missed by family and all those who knew him. He will always be in our hearts.

When I was an undergraduate at the University of Central Florida in the ‘70s, Mike took me to lunch one day to one of those endless buffets that young Sigma Chis can’t get enough of. I was “ambushed” at the restaurant by two other Brothers whom Mike had arranged to be there. Together, they convinced me to run for chapter president. That pivotal moment has stood out in my life - that Mike saw more in me than I saw in myself. It's hard to reduce my feelings for him to a short paragraph; and though life’s rivers separated us, I’ll never forget what kind of a man and friend he was. Godspeed, Brother Mike.

Mike and I were friends in high school. He was funny, smart and I really enjoyed his company. We reconnected a few years ago and the esteemed Dr. Scholla was just like I remembered him. He and I were amused that we achieved so much in spite of ourselves! RIP Mike. You will be in my heart forever.

It was my great honor and pleasure to work with Mike for many years on several medical device packaging issues. Not only was he a highly respected colleague but a good friend. What I particularly admired about him was his unique ability to get people in the industry with divergent backgrounds, ideas and skills to move in he same direction to get big things accomplished. My wife Judy and I send our condolences to Muffy and Mikes' family. He will be missed.

I am so sorry for your loss! Mike was a really good friend as we worked together for about 12 years at DuPont in the Medical Packaging business. He was so smart and could make the very complex information simple. He made a real difference in the world with his work on ISO 11607! Even though he was smart as ever, Mike liked to have fun! We used to have theme parties at our hospitality suites for Medical Device trade shows and he was all in, even dressing up in a Flintstones costume one year! As much as he loved work, he really loved his family! He was very proud of his kids and was always sharing your accomplishments. He loved being a grandpa and although I haven’t talked to him in several years, I am sure he was so happy to have so many grandchildren. He will be watching over all of you in spirit as your family continues to grow!

My most sincere sympathies to all who knew and loved Mike but especially his family. Mike changed my life and my career. Upon meeting him in the late 90s while he was leading Tyvek Medical Packaging he became my instant mentor and life long friend. He offered me a job that very same meeting and laughingly called me junior bug checker. Everything about Mike was big. His smile, his ability to light up a room, captivate an audience, his leadership, love for his family and friends. Mike was big in my life. I am forever grateful for his guidance and life long friendship.

I met Mike in 1990 at the Minneapolis FDA offices to discuss microbial challenge testing of intact packaging for Medical Devices. This started a friendship that would last until his passing. Mike was a giant in the medical device packaging and sterilization community and dedicated his career to traveling the world establishing standards and giving talks at different conferences. I will always cherish the years we spent together on the AAMI Board of Directors and the work we were able to accomplish together. He will be sorely missed but not forgotten as his hand prints will always be on the ISO standards that provide safety for sterile barrier packaging. RIP

My deepest sympathies to Mike's family and friends. I got to know Mike through participation in AAMI. Mike was a true leader. He was mentor to so many of us. He was the consummate professional and showed me, through his actions, what it means to contribute to the development of important standards and to lead a group to get that done. Mike was a true gentleman. I am so glad I got to know him and work with him. He is missed. But his legacy, the shadow he casts, will endure forever.

Mike Scholla was the Board chair at AAMI while I served as its President/CEO. I especially admired Mike’s ability to listen to others and then cut through the clutter to get to the essence of what was important. He had the unique ability to be a detailed microbiologist while also seeing the big picture and being strategic. He was an amazing mentor for me. He also had courage more than most, on many levels, professional and personal. I’m so sorry for his family’s loss.
Richard Jackson left a message on January 30, 2024:
My condolences to Mike's family. My association with Mike was professional. In that world he was a giant and cast a large shadow of influence and impact. I greatly enjoyed my work with Mike and he earned my highest respect. DuPont, the medical packaging industry and even the world was made better through his impact. May your positive contributions never be forgotten.
Hal Miller left a message on January 30, 2024:
We grew up together in the international medical device area through AAMI and have been friends ever since. We forged through the industry as the “Bug Checker and Box Head” duo. He is so better off now than what he went through these past years. God bless and Rest In Peace.

Muffy, Christopher, Surita, Megan, Jeff and Stephen, My deepest condolences to you and your extended family. I am among the countless engineers working in medical device packaging whose career has been shaped by the work of Mike Scholla. Having the privilege to work on ISO 11607 with Mike is one of the highlights of my career. He was always quick with a story, and more importantly a solution. He had a remarkable ability to get roomfuls of experts from different countries and cultures all on the same page. He did this quickly, effectively, and with a style that was all his own. Mike's legacy will continue to shape sterility assurance around the world for generations to come. Jordan Montgomery
