Mary Frances Garvey Thomas passed away July 17, 2015 at the grand age of 87 in the home of her daughter, Sara.
Mary was born in County Sligo, Ireland on April 29, 1928. She was the eldest child of John and Ellen Flemming Garvey.
After surviving a major illness as a child, she left Ireland at age 18 to study nursing in England, She worked in many hospitals in the OR, burn units and plastic surgery. Her nursing career spanned many countries, including Ireland, Australia, England and America. In 1969, she married Australian Steeplechase jockey, Dave Thomas and together with their family traveled to many locations as Dave continued his riding career.
Mary was quite a character and enjoyed people much younger as they made her laugh and feel alive. She had a great interest in the world outside her own and hoped to leave people a bit happier than she encountered them. At the end, she wanted to go “home” and finally has left the body that stopped that, and is most likely walking the fields of Sligo.
She is survived by her daughter Sara (Jamie) and her children Stephen Worsley, Cameron and Allison Barnes of Warwick, MD; son David Thomas of Knightdale, NC and his children Ethan and Maegan Thomas of Brooklet, GA; daughter Marie O’Leary (John) of County Cork, Ireland and her children Shane, Ross, Conor and Hazel; step daughter Nyree Thomas of Bath, ME; sister Kathleen Kelly, and brothers Tom and Gerry Garvey of Dublin, Ireland and sister Ellen Downing of Yonkers, NY. She had a large host of nieces and nephews. Mary was preceded in death by her husband David, her parents, John and Ellen, and very recently her sister Christine Kirk of County Cork, Ireland.
Mary loved and adored flowers, especially pink ones. Each time you see a pink flower, give a little thought to her as she’ll be thinking of you, too.
