Mary Ellen Armstrong Ryser, aged 85, of Wilmington, DE, and formerly of Newark, DE, passed away on Thursday, December 13, 2012 at Regal Heights Rehabilitation Home in Wilmington, DE.
She was born on August 25, 1927 in Philadelphia, PA, to the late Mifflin F. and Mary E. (Eimerbrink) Armstrong. An excellent athlete, she lettered in three sports, including field hockey, basketball and tennis in her high school career at Upper Darby. Mary worked as an Administrative Assistant for the University Of Delaware Agriculture Department where she retired in 1990. She loved animals of all types, especially her beloved Pugs which she owned throughout her life. She also enjoyed reading, watching movies, and gardening. Always the athlete, Mary enjoyed watching sports of all types, especially tennis, gymnastics, and figure ice skating.
Mary is survived by her sons, Bruce W. Ryser and wife, Barbara of Tampa, FL, Kenneth J. Ryser and wife Kathy of Newark, DE, Ted M. Ryser and wife Susan of Newark, DE; sister Barbara Van Horn of Warminster, PA; grandchildren, Alexander Ryser and wife Frances of Norristown, PA, Kelly Ryser of Newark, DE, Kyle Ryser of Newark, DE, and Shawn Rohe and husband Ben of Newark, DE and three great grandchildren.
The family would like to acknowledge and thank the members of Vitas Hospice and Regal Heights Rehabilitation Home for the care and support given to Mary in the last four years.
Service will be held at 2 PM on Monday, December 17, 2012 at Gracelawn Memorial Chapel, 2220 N. Du Pont Hwy., New Castle, DE 19720. Friends and family may visit one hour prior to the service. Memorial contributions can be made to Delaware Humane Society c/o R.T. Foard & Jones F.H., 122 W. Main St., Newark, DE 19711.
