Mary E. Aiken, nee McDowell, peacefully passed away surrounded by her family on the morning of August 15th at the age of 98.
Mary was a proud member of the Conrad Class of ’39 and attended many of their reunions. Prior to World War II, she and James L. Aiken wed. During the war, she worked for Bellanca Aircraft. Home and family have always been central to her life. In 1962, she moved to a small family farm which continues to run today.
Mary loved to keep busy taking produce to King Street Farmers Market for many years and delivering eggs to homes in Newark, Wilmington, and New Castle. Later she ran a stand on the family farm where Mary would greet visitors with a grand smile, boasting of the benefits of Newark tomatoes. She loved hearing the customers’ stories and sharing a laugh with them. She retired from Haveg Industries shortly after the birth of her first grandchild. Mary continued to care for family well into her 80’s and 90’s becoming the primary caregiver for her sister.
She is survived by her daughter Jane Wright and son-in-law Wayne, granddaughter MaryBeth Schweitzer (Peter), and grandson James Wright. She is preceded into death by her husband and her sisters and brothers.
Services will start with a visitation at R.T. Foard and Jones Funeral Home, 122 W. Main St., Newark, DE 19711 at 10:00am. The service will then start at 11:00am. After the burial at Ebenezer United Methodist Church, there will be a luncheon at St. Andrew’s Church located in Newark. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made payable to “St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church” and sent in care of the funeral home.
