Mark Louring Miller, age 81, of (Calvert) North East, MD passed away on July 29, 2012 in Union Hospital of Cecil County after a short illness. He died peacefully passing into his heavenly Father’s arms with his family surrounding him.
Mark was born on February 9, 1931 in Calvert, Cecil County MD to the late Pearl Irene Rakes and William McKinley Miller, originally from Swords Creek, VA. He resided in North East, MD (Elk Neck/Elk River area) for 3 years and had previously resided in North East (Calvert) for 78 years.
Mark worked at General Motors, as a forklift driver for nearly 30 years and had worked on the Pearl Rakes Miller’s family farm most of his life until age 32. He also worked (sometimes 3 jobs at a time) as: a North East area school bus driver, farmer on the Harve Meadows’ farm in Rising Sun, a milk truck and mushroom manure truck driver, a watch salesman and repairman while he worked at General Motors and as a laborer for Day Basket Factory in North East. For the last four years of his life he volunteered as an office assistant for his daughter, Kathy at First Baptist Church of North East.
Even though Mark worked very hard during his life, some of the pleasures he enjoyed in recent years were: riding a golf cart to the Elk River with his wife Edna to watch the wildlife, taking long rides, going out to eat, visiting the residents at Calvert Manor Healthcare Center and working jigsaw puzzles. In his lifetime he also enjoyed going to church, listening to gospel music, telling (clean) jokes, walking, feeding and watching birds, visiting relatives and especially visiting his first wife’s family in Council, VA, hunting game and ground hogs, fishing, riding motorcycles, camping in a motor home, solving wooden, brain teaser puzzles and relaxing and riding the pontoon boat at his cottage on the Susquehanna River. He enjoyed mowing his lawn until about two weeks prior to his death.
Mark is survived by his wife of three years, Edna Mary Keithley Hamilton Miller of North East, MD; his children, Kathy M. Gray and husband Ronald of North East, MD, Arlie J. Miller of (Calvert) North East, MD and Carol L. Brammer and husband Richard of (Calvert) North East, MD; grandchildren, Jason Miller of Newark, DE, Autumn Orr and husband Fred of Rising Sun, MD, Audrea Miller of Oxford, PA, Mark Gray of Alexandria, VA and Jesse Miller of (Calvert) North East, MD; brothers, J. Madison “Doc” Miller of (Calvert) North East, MD, Elbert “Bruno” T. Miller, Sr. of (Calvert) North East, MD, Ralph H. Miller of (Calvert) North East, MD, Carl H. Miller of Woodstock, VA and Robert H. Miller, Sr. of (Calvert) North East, MD; sisters, Mildred E. McMillan of Newark, DE, L. Eleanor Yates of Newark, DE and Hilda F. Miller of Rising Sun, MD; step-children, Barbara Hall of Oxford, PA, Thomas Hall and wife Diane of (Elk Neck) North East, MD, Rev. He is also survived by a brother-in-law, Carter Tiller and wife Patricia of Council, VA and a sister-in-law, Barbara Owens and her husband Clayton of Bee, VA and aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his first wife of 59 years and mother of his children, Etta May (Tiller) Miller; brothers, Tivis, Jeffery, Geffory and Herman Miller; sisters, Manalene Rose and Goldia Cissel; and step-daughter, Sarah Ewing.
Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, August 2, 2012 at Nottingham Missionary Baptist Church, 303 West Christine Road, Nottingham, PA where friends may visit starting at 9:30 a.m. Officiating services will be Rev. Gary Moore and Rev. Robert Hall. Interment will follow at the Calvert Friends Cemetery in Calvert, MD.
