Maria Chahalis (née Kramedas) passed away on October 23, 2026, at Cadia Broadmeadow skilled nursing facility in Middletown, Delaware. She was 98 years old.
Maria was born on December 28, 1928, in Trapezonti, a village in Sparta, Greece. She immigrated to the United States in 1955. In 1960, she returned to Sparta, where she married her husband, Demetrios Chahalis. The couple then returned to the United States together and lived in various locations, including Perth Amboy, New Jersey, before settling in Wilmington, Delaware, in 1977. Together, they raised their two sons, Nick and George.
Maria was a devoted wife, mother and homemaker who dedicated much of her life to caring for her home and family. She and Demetrios also owned and operated a sub shop in downtown Wilmington. Maria was an accomplished seamstress and took great pride in her skill and craftsmanship.
She was also an outstanding cook, and family and friends always looked forward to the traditional Greek cuisine and her famous Greek cookies and pastries she lovingly prepared. Her cooking and baking were one of the many ways she shared her Greek heritage and her love for those around her, and the meals she prepared will remain a treasured memory for her family and friends.
Maria was a proud mother, and becoming a Yiayia brought her particular joy. She dearly loved her grandchildren and treasured the special place they held in her life.
Maria was deeply committed to her Greek Orthodox faith and was a member of Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church in Wilmington, Delaware.
Maria will be remembered for her strength, her devotion to her family, her wonderful Greek cooking, and the life she built after leaving her native Greece and coming to the United States. Above all, she will always be remembered as a beloved Mama and Yiayia in the hearts of her loving family.
Her sons, Nick and George, are blessed and proud to have called her their mother.
Maria was preceded in death by her husband, Demetrios Chahalis; her parents, George and Eleni Kramedas; and her siblings, Theodore Kramedas, Cleopatra Govastes, Gus Kramedas and Gregory Kramedas.
Maria is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Nick and Caroline Chahalis of Bear, Delaware, and their children, Nicolette Simmons (Kyle) and Christopher Chahalis; son and daughter-in-law, George and Georgia Chahalis of Tulsa, Oklahoma, and their children, Christina and Demetri Chahalis; her sister, Voula Fotakos of Sparta, Greece, as well as many cousins, nieces and nephews.
Family and friends are invited to a visitation on October 27, 2026, from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, 808 N. Broom Street, Wilmington, Delaware. The funeral service will begin at 11:30 a.m., with interment to follow at Silverbrook Cemetery and Memorial Park, 3300 Lancaster Pike, Wilmington, Delaware.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Compassionate Care Hospice of Newark, Delaware, in Maria’s memory.
May her memory be eternal!
