Mrs. Lucia Girard Mitchell of Bear, DE passed away on June 11, 2014, at the age of 81, following several months of declining health.
Lucia, the third child of Harold Hawes Girard and Elizabeth French Girard was born in Syracuse, NY on July 11, 1932. She graduated from Nottingham High School in 1951. In the Summer of 1950, Lucia met and commenced a two-year romance with Mr. Frederick C. Mitchell, Jr., of Wilmington, DE. That romance led to their marriage in Syracuse on June 14, 1952.
Though a dedicated wife, mother, and homemaker, Mrs. Mitchell found numerous opportunities to volunteer her wisdom and energy in several church activities and in support of the Alpha Phi Sorority and its members with whom she was affiliated.
Among the varied employment roles that Mrs. Mitchell undertook she got the greatest satisfaction and pride from her efforts in the re-appraisal of properties in New Castle County.
In her younger years, Lucia enjoyed playing golf and friendly bridge games, but later she found that playing board and other games of challenge and learning with her sons and grandchildren more rewarding.
Throughout her life, Lucia’s observations of bird and plant lives surrounding her homes provided opportunities to express her artistic talents.
Mrs. Mitchell was predeceased by her parents, her brother Harold H. Girard, Jr. and her sister Nancy Girard Blakey.
She is survived by her husband, her five sons, Fred C. III (Amy), Edmund M. (Nicole), Donald A. (Carolyn), Clifford O. (Arleen), and Bradford K. (Rebecca), and twelve grandchildren.
Services will be private.
It is suggested that contributions in her memory be made to organizations of the donor’s choice.
